Creating your online story using Weblogs

Inserting gems (e.g. audio) into your stories

If you have gems (such as audio files) that you want to include in your stories you must first ensure that they are saved in an appropriate format for the Web (streaming Windows media or RealMedia files are best). Most sound editing packages allow you to save you images in these formats. You must also check on any copyright implications if using sound clips that are not your own recordings.

Creating new gems

Creating a new gem involves uploading your files to the Schoolblogs server and giving them a title. To do this, first select the Gems option for the Editors menu displayed at the top of the screen.

A list of your gems already stored in your site on the Schoolblogs server is displayed along with the option to create a new gem.

List of gems

Select the option to Create a New Gem at the end of the list of gems. A new window will then appear giving you the chance to enter a title for the gem and choose a file from your local or hard drive. Click the Post new Gem button to save your gem to the Schoolblogs server.

Reviewing your gems

You can review your gem (i.e. listen to the audio file) by selecting the gem from the list of gems displayed. The appropriate media player will then be launched to allow you to play the selected sound file.

Inserting gems in your stories

You can insert gems into stories by typing the name of the gem in double quotes in the appropriate location of your story. In this example, the "eye witness account" audio file will be placed in the list of links displayed at the bottom of the main headline page.

Inserting gems

The associated gem will then appear as a link at the specified location in your story.
