Prerequisite(s): INFS 5058 Fundamentals of Information Systems M OR , INFT 1016 Fundamentals of Information Technology.
Corequisite(s): COMP 1011 Programming in Java 1 OR , COMP 1008 Business Applications Programming 1.
The database environment; strategic data and systems planning; traditional file and database concepts.
Three-level architecture (conceptual, internal and external schemas) and data independence. Database requirements definition. Conceptual design plus design guidelines.
Overview of emerging database concepts.
Alternative data model notations: ER and UML; guidelines on choosing between alternative data model notations. Translation between UML and Entity-Relationship diagrams.
Logical design plus design guidelines: the relational model, functional dependency; when and how to normalise.
Physical design plus design guidelines: de-normalization; cluster and index structures, general rules of thumb on selection and placement of clusters and indices. Mention of object relational, hierarchical and network implementations.
The use of interactive SQL to construct and query databases. SQL from within a program.
Database management systems, Database administration and related functions. The decision of whether or not to use a database management system.
Specialist database topics such as Relational Algebra and embedded SQL, database access components and database APIs
