Course details
Introduction to the role and status of craft and design in European art history; comparative studies in selected Asia-Pacific cultures; "Eastern" traditions of ceramics and textiles (Thailand, Japan, China and Indonesia); Orientalism and craft; art versus craft in the west; William Morris and the rise of the Arts and Craft movement; traditional and contemporary Indigenous craft practices in Australia, the gendering of craft; the role of craft in art education; the internationalising of art and craft in regional exchange; current debates in contemporary craft theory.
