Aim

The breast imaging option of the program is designed to provide diagnostic radiographers with the mechanism to develop new skills and knowledge in specialist areas of mammography and breast ultrasound.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally required to be eligible for accreditation as a diagnostic radiographer by the Australian Institute of Radiography (AIR) and have completed appropriate postgraduate experience. Overseas applicants may be admitted on the basis of an approved equivalent qualification and experience.

Applicants with other qualifications and appropriate demonstrated experience equivalent to the above may be considered for entry.

English language entry requirements

International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic): Overall score of 6.5, with minimum sub-scores of 6.0 in Reading and Writing, obtained within the last two years or corresponding results from an equivalent test such as TOEFL or the appropriate Academic English language level delivered at CELUSA;
OR
Successful completion of a tertiary qualification at diploma level or above completed in Australia within the last two years;
OR
Successful completion of at least two years of tertiary study at diploma level or above conducted and completed in English within the last five years in a country in which;

Where the study in English was more than five years ago, this requirement may be satisfied by subsequent and recent work experience of at least two years duration in a setting where English is the language of business subject to satisfactory evidence as determined by the University.

Content/structure

Students complete 18 units of specifically designed Breast Imaging courses.

Professional Recognition

Graduates of the program are eligible to apply for full professional accreditation from the Australasian Sonographer Accreditation Registry (ASAR) under the appropriate Sonography category.

Rules

  1. No course that is substantially equivalent to a course taken in gaining another award may be included in the program of study.
  2. Credit for previous studies or exemption from work within courses may be granted in accordance with University policy. Maximum credit allowed is normally one third of the total units of the program.
  3. The program is generally offered on a part-time basis over two or four study periods, and is offered only by external delivery.

  2. Prerequisites for the course Breast Sonography are Ultrasound Physics and Instrumentation 1 and Ultrasound Physics and Instrumentation 2 (or alternatively the completion of the Diploma of Medical Ultrasonography Part 1, awarded by the Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine, within 5 years prior to enrolment in the program), and Mammography. Ultrasound Physics and Instrumentation 2 may be studied in the same study period as the course Breast Sonography if it has not been previously completed.

  3. Students may enrol in the course Mammography as internal or external, but all students are required to attend an intensive one-week workshop on campus.
