Aim

To provide basic counselling knowledge, skills training and personal development for professionals working in human service areas-educators, nursing and other health professionals, managers, human resource development personnel, volunteer counsellors - and for those intending to work in these areas in the future.

Entry requirements

Entry to the Graduate Diploma in Social Science (Counselling Studies) requires a three-year degree. Entry is competitive and will be made on the basis of academic merit.

English language entry requirements

For international applicants for whom English is a second language, the minimum English language requirements are:

International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic): Minimum score of 6.0 in Reading and Writing subscores and minimum overall score of 6.5 obtained within the last two years or corresponding results from an equivalent test such as TOEFL or the appropriate Academic English language level delivered at CELUSA; or

Successful completion of a tertiary qualification at diploma level or above completed in Australia within the last two years; or

Successful completion of two or more years of tertiary study at diploma level or above conducted and completed in English within the last five years in a country in which:

Where the study in English was more than five years ago, this requirement may be satisfied by subsequent and recent work experience of two or more years duration in a setting where English is the language of business subject to satisfactory evidence as determined by the Program Director.

Content/structure

The program requires the completion of 8 x 4.5 unit courses (36 units), including 5 compulsory core courses (22.5 units) and 3 elective courses (13.5 units).

Fees for Domestic students: Commonwealth Supported
Fees for Commonwealth Supported Students are calculated at the course level. Click on individual courses in the schedule below to determine total program fees.

Fees for International students: $AU 18,500 per 1.0 EFTSL for students commencing in 2010.
Fees are calculated on a per Unit basis with 1.0 EFTSL = 36 Units.
Fees for International students are determined one year in advance and are subject to variation.

Notes

  1. Full-time students will normally complete the program in 1 year. Part-time students will normally complete the program in two or three years.
  2. WELF 5039 Counselling Practice is a pre/corequisite for BEHL 5037 Counselling for Change.
  3. WELF 5039 Counselling Practice and BEHL 5037 Counselling for Change are pre/corequisites for WELF 5049 Developmental Themes in Counselling.
  4. It is recommended that WELF 5039 Counselling Practice and BEHL 5038 Counselling Theories be taken early in the program of study.
  5. In the event that a student has covered core course material as part of another award, they may negotiate with the Program Director to choose another elective in place of the core requirement.
  6. Credit may be granted for courses which are seen as relevant if they are not part of another award, are at the same level of study and are worth 4.5 units or more. In this case, students may apply to the Program Director for credit for up to 13.5 units (3 courses).
  7. With the permission of the Program Director, students may substitute a counselling studies elective course with a relevant course from another award of equivalent standing.
  8. Not all electives will be offered each year.
  9. In exceptional circumstances and with the permission of the Program Director, students may choose an elective from the core courses in the Master of Social Science (Counselling Studies).
  10. Selected courses will be available in external mode.
