Student Registration
Student registration with the State Registration Board is required prior to enrolment in this program and must be maintained throughout the program.  See the requirements on the Physiotherapy Board of South Australia web-site. Students who fail to register or who do not meet registration criteria and are refused registration by the Board, or who have their registration rescinded during the program, will be unable to continue in the program.

Applicants with a confirmed offer* must register on the Registration Board's Student Register before commencing the program.

Aim

This 72-unit program aims to provide an avenue for graduates holding an appropriate Bachelors degree to undertake an alternative program to the Bachelor of Physiotherapy in order to develop foundation competencies, practical skills and professional knowledge essential to meet the registration requirements to practice as a physiotherapist. The proposed program builds on a student's previous tertiary studies particularly in anatomy and physiology, and recognises the development of a range of life skills and experiences including successful experience of adult learning within a tertiary institution.

For entry to this program each applicant must provide evidence (detailed course statement, program curriculum and academic transcript) that they have successfully studied at a tertiary level and that within the bachelor degree, the student has successfully completed each of the following requirements at least at a credit level ( 65%):

The Bachelors degree or equivalent must have been conferred within the past 10 years.

Applicants with permanent or temporary disabilities will be required to attend a counselling session with the Program Director in order to clarify and discuss any special educational requirements, which may need to be considered in order to successfully undertake the Master of Physiotherapy (Graduate Entry).


English language entry requirements

In addition, international students who speak English as a foreign language must have obtained one of the following standards within the last two years prior to admission:

Note 2: The University, through UniSA International, maintains a list of countries where English is commonly used and which would satisfy this criterion. This may include particular educational institutions within a given non-English speaking country where English is the language of instruction.

Content/structure

This program runs over 2 years, commencing and finishing in mid year and requires completion of 72 units of study. The courses offered within the first half of the year focus on fundamental physiotherapy skills (electrotherapy, massage, manual handling, assessment and clinical reasoning) and applied physiology/pathological process relevant to the broad physiotherapy profession (motor control, motor learning). Students will progress though basic client presentations to more complex pathological, social and interpersonal issues. A four-week clinical placement is scheduled within the summer study period, as a means of commencing clinical practice and uses these fundamental skills and knowledge within a working environment.

Clinical management is further developed in the latter part of the program through placements in community and hospital settings (Acute Care, Rehabilitation, Advanced Rehabilitation, Pain Sciences). An understanding of and the practical implications for evaluating the efficacy of physiotherapy practice will be developed. Health Promotion and principles of primary care are developed through a clinical placement during November through to February of the second year. In addition, to further clinical practice placements, professional issues such as business management and organisation are also included to prepare students for the work place.

Professional Recognition

This program provides an acceptable academic training for membership of the Australian Physiotherapy Association.

Rules

  1. Police Check: All students in the Division of Health Sciences who undertake field or clinical placements, or participate in University clinics as part of their program, must have had an Australian police clearance prior to the commencement of any placement or clinic activity.
  2. Student registration with the State Registration Board is required prior to enrolment in this program and must be maintained throughout the program.
  3. Students will be required to satisfy the standard of dress and behaviour prescribed by institutions in which the clinical placements are undertaken. Failure to satisfy such requirements may prevent them satisfying the requirements for the completion of the program.
  4. Students must successfully complete a recognised first aid course before they will be allowed to commence the clinical section of the program and must maintain a current CPR certificate throughout the clinical section.
  5. Students will be required to undertake two clinical placements outside normal university teaching weeks.
  6. No credit allowed due to accelerated nature of program.

Notes

  1. Students may be required to undergo a medical examination before commencing clinical placements as determined by the relevant hospital authorities. It is recommended that all students are vaccinated against Hepatitis B and Tuberculosis before commencing the program.
  2. The program requires participation in laboratory classes where manual skills and topics such as surface anatomy are presented. Essential learning strategies require that all students disrobe appropriately to act as subjects for their peer group in laboratory classes.
  3. Students are advised that they may be required to spend time in a clinical placement outside Adelaide in a country or interstate location.
  4. Students are strongly encouraged to study full-time. Students seeking part-time study must discuss this with the Program Director prior to enrolment. Part-time students are normally expected to complete the program in four years.
  5. Attendance requirements apply to the clinical components of the program. Students enrolled in courses with a clinical component will need to attend on a full-time basis for the duration of the clinics.
