Aim
The Doctor of Project Management is designed to provide the opportunity for graduate students to develop the
- operational capabilities to manage projects of all kinds,
- research capabilities to undertake doctoral level studies into selected areas of the discipline, and
- ability to disseminate the research findings to the general and professional communities.
Entry requirements
An applicant for a place in the program must satisfy the relevant Dean, Research of competence to undertake the degree by:
- Holding or being eligible to hold from an approved higher education institution an award which is assessed by this university as being equivalent to:
- An Honours degree or a Bachelors degree with Honours of at least 2A standard; or
- An appropriate Masters degree; or
- A coursework Master of Project Management degree from the University of South Australia with a GPA of 5 or better; or
- Holding such other qualifications as are acceptable to the Research Degrees Committee; and
- Having at least five years experience of practice in their relevant field, normally within the last ten years.
In addition, International students who speak English as a foreign language must have obtained one of the following standards within the last two years prior to admission:
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic ) overall score 6.5 with a minimum score of 6.0 in each subscore test (reading, writing, listening and speaking), obtained within the last two years prior to the date of the application; or corresponding results from an equivalent test such as Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or the appropriate Academic English language level delivered by the Centre for English Language at the University of South Australia (CELUSA); or
- Successful completion of a tertiary qualification at Bachelor level or above completed in Australia within the last two years; or
- Successful completion of at least two years of tertiary study at diploma level or above conducted and completed in English within the last five years in a country in which English is commonly used, as determined by the University. Where the study in English was more than five years ago, this requirement may be satisfied by subsequent and recent work experience of at least two years duration in a setting where English is the language of business subject to satisfactory evidence as determined by the University.
Content/structure
The program requires the completion of the coursework (36 units) and comprises the development of a proposal and the successful completion of a doctoral level research project. It consists of 108 units of total study (36 units by coursework plus 68 units of Research) and has been structured to be completed over three years full time or part time equivalent study.

Rules
- Credit for previous studies or exemption from work within courses may be granted in accordance with University policy. Maximum credit allowed is normally one third of the total units of the program. Credit will only be granted for coursework components and not for any of the research components.
In order to assess Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) each individual wishing to undertake the Doctor of Project Management will submit a detailed portfolio to the Postgraduate Project Management Committee specifically describing: - All academic qualifications
- A description of employment history fully detailing all project management experience.
- A description of all involvement in research activities.
- A description of all published and / or presented papers.
- Graduates of the 36 unit Graduate Diploma of Project Management wishing to upgrade to the Doctor of Project Management (108 units), will be granted credit for their previous awards, provided the appropriate options have been undertaken (and they have achieved a GPA average of 5 or better), and they meet eligibility criteria for a Higher Degree by Research, but in order to receive the new award, they will be required to surrender the earlier parchment in accordance with policy A-24.2.
- Students wishing to transfer from the existing Master of Project Management must have achieved a grade point average in excess of 5 for their course work and meet the eligibility criteria for a Higher Degree by Research.
