Introduction
The University of South Australia provides a range of resources to support academics in the development of their scholarship of teaching in the area of online teaching and learning. This site and the accompanying checklist address quality issues in online teaching and learning by identifying the standards by which online courses are judged and by providing support for academics to develop their own scholarship of teaching in the area of online learning in order to make these judgements.
This site focuses on four areas - instructional design, interface design, use of media and technical aspects - with items developed in each to reflect specific standards. The areas and standards associated with them have been derived directly from teaching and learning theory as it applies to online situations. The paper-based checklist together with this supporting website can be used to support the scholarship of teaching and learning through personal reflection or to structure a review of online materials by invited academics. These instruments have particular relevance within quality initiatives such as general course improvement processes, formal evaluation of courses and in providing evidence to support applications for promotion.
