Biographical summary
Erica Green has been Director of the University of South Australia Art Museum since 1990.
She is an artist by training (Alexander Mackie CAE, Diploma in Visual Arts, 1980 and Bachelor of Arts (Visual Arts, 1983) and gained a Graduate Diploma in Museum Studies from Sydney University in 1985. She has worked as a project officer for the Visual Arts Craft Board of the Australia Council and was formerly an Administrator at Artspace, Sydney. As Director of the Bitumen River Gallery, Canberra, she initiated and managed the process which led to establishment of the Canberra Contemporary Art Space.
During her tenure as Director of the University of South Australia Art Museum, Green has developed the profile of the Art Museum to one of national visibility, artistic credibility and local prominence. The University is presently embarked on a major capital works program, which will see creation of a new, major Art Museum building, becoming the second-largest public gallery in South Australia.
In addition to her effective advocacy for these much-needed facilities in Adelaide, Green has managed oversight of a substantial Art Museum program, which is recognized for its important contribution to South Australian visual arts culture. Green curates and manages an annual exhibition, publication and forum program which emphasizes contemporary art, craft and design, including architecture. She is responsible for the University of South Australia Art Collection, on behalf of which she has initiated major public art commissionings, including Alex Danko’s now-famous, brick Home, located in the Lion Arts Centre Courtyard. Artistic highlights in the Art Museum programs have included Jenny Holzer’s internationally acclaimed Lustmord, and the Kabakov’s Monument to a Lost Civilization exhibitions. Her most recent personal project was the exhibition and publication Eden & the Apple of Sodom, curated by Green for the 2002 Adelaide Festival.
In March 2003, Green was invited by the Adelaide Festival of the Arts to facilitate and deliver a visual arts Program, including Artists’ Week, for the 2004 Festival. She has undertaken the role as a consultancy to the Adelaide Festival of Arts, through the University of South Australia Art Museum .
