Henning Bjornlund holds two academic positions; he is a Canada Research Chair in Water Policy and Management at University of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada and an Associate Research Professor at the University of South Australia. He has researched water management and policy issues in Australia since 1993 and in Canada since 2005. His research has been continuously funded by bodies such as the Australian Research Council, Land and Water Australia, SSHRC, the Canadian Water Network, the Royal Geographical Society in London, and the Alberta Water Research Institute. He recently served on the Ministers Advisory Group on Water Allocation and Management in Alberta. Henning has written widely about water policy and management issues with more than 200 publications. In 2008 the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors in London published his report ‘Water Scarcity and its implication for land management - Some lessons from Australia’ to inform its 140,000 members worldwide about the implications of new water policy reforms for their professions. His new edited book ‘Incentives and Instruments for Sustainable Irrigation’ has just been released by WITPress, Southampton and in April 2010 the C.D. Howe Institute in Toronto will release his Commentary ‘Sustainable Water Management - Striking the balance between social, environmental and economic needs’.

Research interests

  • My area of research is water resources management. I am presently working on a project funded by the Australian Research Council and five industry participants to investigate various aspects of water markets such as their best application to buy water for the environment. Over the last 15 years I have worked on one ARC SPIRT project and two ARC Linkage grants funded by the Australian Research Counci and two projects funded by the Land and Water Australia. These projects have all had to do with evaluating the socio-economic impact of water markets and to develop a policy framework for a more efficiently working market. Currently I am also working on two projects funded by the Alberta Water Research Institute. One project involves identifying the best and most acceptable way of facilitating a reallocation of water from existing users to new users including the environment and assessing their likely acceptance as well as their socioeconomic impacts. The second project investigates various issues associated with the provision of eco-system services including how to value them and how best to design and implement them in such a way that they are acceptable both in the supply and demand side.
  • The implication of water market policies on the valuation of farm land
  • Water Policies related to un-regulated rivers and groundwater aquifers
  • Water policies and developing countries
