Howard Harris's major interest is in corporate ethics. He has taught corporate ethics in Adelaide, Hong Kong and Singapore, and is now responsible for the Business & society course in the undergaduate core for all Business division students at UniSA.
Activity in corporate ethics includes publications, teaching, workshops, consultancy and seminars. He has served on the committee of the Australian Association for Professional and Applied Ethics since 1998.
Howard Harris is convenor of the Group for research in Integrity and Governance (GIG) and through it a member of the cross-divisional Hawke Research Institute.
He led the Australian consortium in Symphony, a multi-national research project under the auspices of the IMS Intelligent Manufacturing Systems program, with participation from Europe, Canada and Australia. Symphony developed a set of modular tools to assist medium-sized businesses adopt an agile stance when operating in networks and rapidly changing environments.
As founding director of Smartlink, Howard brought together industry, university and government in an initiative to enhance the management capabilities of small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises in Australia. He relinquished this position at the end of 2002.
From 2003-06 he led the CIEAM Toolbox project within the Cooperative Research Centre for Integrated Engineering Asset Management (CIEAM). He was responsible for the research program developed through both Smartlink and the Australian Centre for Automotive Management (ACAM).
Howard completed his PhD in 1999 with a thesis entitled "An account of courage in management decision making", and is responsible for the course International Management Ethics and Values in the management degree.
Coming to the University after a career in industry, Howard has experience in senior management in Australia and overseas. He worked in sugar manufacture, rural industries, petroleum, corporate strategy and human resource management. For ten years he was a principal in an Adelaide-based consulting practice working in the field of corporate strategy and corporate finance.
Howard was on study leave in the first half of 2007, principally at the Institute for Manufacturing, University of Cambridge UK, working on leadership and virtue. On study leave in 2003 Howard worked with the Fraunhofer Institute at Stuttgart in Germany and at the Practical Ethics Center at the University of Montana.
Teaching interests
- Business and society. Part of the common first year core for students enrolled in degrees within the BUsiness division at UniSA, this course covers the contribution of business to society, ethics, sustainability and what it means to be professional. I led the development of the course during 2009 following a review of core courses.
- Corporate ethics. I designed and taught the course International Management Ethics & Values, a course for students in the Bachelor of Management program. In Singapore the course wass taught in the Logistics and Supply Chain management degree and in the BBA. For some years it was taught in Hong Kong. Total annual enrolement in 2009 exceeded 400, in both face-to-face and online modes.
- Education for practicing managers and professionals, especially in management skills beyond their initial speciality.

Research interests
- Corporate ethics, particularly the value of ethical culture and practice as a competitive benefit for an organisation, and the factors which can influence individuals in their response to situations where it may be difficult to act according to one's own (or one's corporate) code of conduct.
