Hello and welcome to my webpage. I graduated from Tehran University, Persia, with Honours majoring in Counselling and Advice before I migrated to Australia, Sydney in 1986. I then moved to Adelaide where I did my Masters in Educational Psychology and my PhD in Health Psychology at Adelaide University. I am currently a senior lecturer with the School of Nursing and Midwifery, the University of South Australia. I am also a UniSA supported researcher and have been recently selected for the UniSA Research Leadership Program. I have also recently been appointed by the Governor of South Australia to be a deputy member of Health Performance Council (HPC), to play a key role in advising the Minister For Health on the effectiveness of the health system and health outcomes for South Australians and specific population groups.
I have been engaged in cross-cultural psychology and public health research, in both qualitative and quantitative research methods for more than 19 years and have made substantial contributions to the public discourse on migrants’ and refugees’ mental health in Australia. My contribution is reflected in my publications, consultancies, project management and also in the significant public lectures I have been invited to deliver. My latest contribution to the research in this field is my role as the lead investigator of a 3 year ARC Linkage collaborative project, the largest study of its kind undertaken in Australia on the mental health of refugee children and adolescents.
I am active in national and international networking and collaboration in the area of transcultural mental health. I also supervise a few post-graduate research degree PhD students both in Australia and Internationally. I have been the recipient of a British Commonwealth Award for Excellence in Women’s Health for the ‘Non-English Speaking Background Women and Violence Project’ in June 1997, and the ‘Equal Opportunity Achievement Award, Individual Category’ in 1996. This award cites the basis of the merit as: ‘Admirable work done to promote equal opportunity in the community’.
