Paula Swatman is the Professor of Information Systems and, with her husband Prof. Paul Swatman, also Co-Director of the Information Systems Research Laboratory (InSyL). She began her career at UniSA in the School of Accounting & Information Systems in the Division of Business and, after a restructure at the start of 2005 brought all computing-related disciplines into a single School, now works in the School of Computer & Information Science in the Dvision of ITEE.
Paula's background lies in the areas of Information Systems and the Digital Economy (see Academic Resume) and she is an OzReader for Australian Research Council grants. She has had a research focus on eBusiness/eCommerce for over 25 years - more details about her current research activities are available from the website of the Digital Economy Initiative, an InSyL project she has developed which focuses on the development of key capabilities to assist Australian businesses increase their share of emerging global markets. Her 25+ years academic & industry experience, as well as research and teaching interests, in the areas of E-Business, Internet Commerce and global systems followed 10+ years working in the banking and information technology industries, prior to returning to academic life in the late 1980's.
Her specialist interests lie in the transformational properties of new technologies for organisations; the evolution of digital content and social networking (with a particular focus upon Enterprise 2.0); the creation and diffusion of E-Business models; e-health and the changing health landscape; E-Markets & supply chain management; rural telecommunications and the impact of broadband and M-Commerce on rural Australia; the implications of the World Wide Web and the online economy; and E-Learning and education in the New Economy. This combination of perspectives has led to a research focus on the strategic implications of the new economy for large and small organisations – particularly those concerning the integration of E-Business into organisational practice and systems.
One of Paula's major achievements for the School of CIS was the industry-funded, limited-term appointment as State Records of SA/Fuji Xerox/State Library of SA Chair of Business Information Management, where she led a multidisciplinary and cross-institutional team of experts in designing a suite of leading-edge graduate teaching programs to link the areas of information management, records and archival management and ICT. These graduate programs are now up and running (see the Business Information Management homepage for details), leaving her free to pursue her core interests.
Paula returned to Australia at the start of 2004, following three years in Germany as Professor of E-Business and Foundation Director of the Institute for Management at the University of Koblenz-Landau, where she was responsible for the setting-up and management of the multi-disicplinary, multi-lingual BSc and MSc degrees in Information Management. She won a 5th Framework European Commission research grant in the area of digital content, SimWeb, during her time in Germany and remains involved in research and teaching activities at the University of Koblenz.
Paula supervises research students in a variety of areas related to E-Business and is particularly interested in applied research of direct value to industry.

Research Degree Supervisor
My research interests are primarily concerned with the transformational impacts of eBusiness / eCommerce on organisations, with my particular interests summarised earlier on this webpage.A list of current and recently completed research projects for which I am principal superviser is included below:
Current Projects:
A. Web 2.0-enabled integration of SMEs and their supply chains
SMEs, especially those involved in the manufacturing sector, are increasingly dependent on complex supply chains for survival. Junheng (Steve) Liao's PhD proposal concerns the possible benefits offered to such SMEs by Web 2.0 technologies and techniques.
Social Networking is not merely an issue for individuals, but is becoming increasingly important for organisations of all kinds. Mohd. Heikal bin Husin's PhD project investigates levels of uptake and the changing nature of Enterprise 2.0 within the Australian environment
Management of corporate information is becoming a matter of increasing importance in both the public and private sectors. Linh Nguyen's PhD research project concerns the development of a framework for successful uptake of Electronic Document & Records Management Systems (EDRMS) by Australian public sector agencies
Salah Awami's PhD project extends the work done by Jean-Pierre Calabretto. It involves the development of a software tool (eMedMAP) to support a hospital-based health care process targeting the effective use of medicines and the enhancement of patient safety, together with an understanding of its acceptability by the primary user groups: hospital pharmacists, medical officers and nurses.
Susan Lambert's PhD research project focuses on an analysis of the elements of e-business models, with the goal of developing a foundation for a true taxonomy.
Teddy So's successfully completed PhD research project investigated teachers' preparedness for the use of e-learning in primary and secondary schools. The project focused on a case study of Hong Kong, but also provided a multi-national review of e-learning readiness.
Lyn Rhyne's successfully completed DBA research project concerned the development of a formal process for the transition from the existing paper-based medical record (PMR) to an electronic clinical record (ECR) within the South Australian acute healthcase context, involving Strategic, Work Flow and ICT elements extending beyond the immediate clinical environment.
Christian Voigt's successfully completed PhD evaluated the effectiveness of eLearning approaches, continuing work he had started in Germany and providing a framework for an understanding of eLearning approaches in both industry and academic environments.
As the quality of health care improves and life expectancy increases, there is an ever-greater need for better quality care within the community - and, consequently, for better communication between GPs and pharmacists. Jean-Pierre Calabretto's successfully completed PhD investigated the effectiveness of electronic document support for community-based medication management programmes, to enhance the quality of the information captured by both pharmacists and GPs.
Farming is becoming an ever-more complex and demanding activity. Nhiem Lu's successfully completed PhD investigated the extent to which M-Commerce could assist in supporting organic farmers in a range of crucial activities: organic certification, record-keeping and the creation of a virtual community.
Cornelia Krueger's successfully completed PhD project evolved from a European Commission 5th Framework grant (SimWeb) in which we were trying to understand the evolution and diffusion of e-business models for digital content. Cornelia's PhD research focused on e-business models in the online news and online music sectors.
Linda Wilkins' successfully completed PhD investigated the use of Evolutionary Diffusion Theory as an explanatory framework for the evolution of innovative technology uptake within sustainable government-sponsored (G2B) communities. The project focuses on the EXDOC online food export documentation system developed by AQIS.
