Professor Nanthi Bolan, Leader of CRC CARE’s Prevention Technologies Program, was appointed Dean of Graduate Studies in July this year. Arriving at UniSA in March 2007, Nanthi was previously the Professor of Soil Science and Director of Postgraduate Studies at New Zealand’s Massey University. ‘I came to UniSA because it had a critical mass of scientists working in environmental research’, Nanthi says. ‘It was an opportunity for me to provide leadership and mentor early career scientists, which I enjoy.’ Despite his new position as Dean, Nanthi remains an active researcher in CRC CARE projects and at the Centre for Environmental Risk Assessment & Remediation Centre. Nanthi completed his PhD at the University of Western Australia in 1983, and has published more than 200 papers. He was awarded the M.L. Leamy Award by the New Zealand Soil Science Society in recognition of his contribution to the discipline and Massey Medal for Postgraduate supervision.

Research interests

  • Nanthi has gained national and international recognition for his fundamental and applied research work in nutrient cycling and fertilizer reactions in soils, surface charge-solute interactions, remediation of contaminated soils, and recycling of wastes and wastewater. Based on his research outputs, peer esteem factors and contribution to research environment he has obtained ‘A’ grade (World-Class research) in the Performance Based Research Fund (PBRF) ranking for the academics in NZ universities.

Research publications

Nanthi has published/presented 451 (referred = 161; Non-referred = 290) journal papers and conference proceedings. Based on his excellent research work and outstanding publication record, he was appointed to the Editorial Board of the Journal of Nutrient Cycling in AgroEcosystem and Journal of Environmental Geology and Health (Springer Science), and as an Associate Editor of one of the prestigious journals in environmental sciences, Journal of Environmental Quality published by American Society of Agronomy. His full publication list is available at Full publication list - a selection of papers from 2008 are shown below.
