My disability, or medical condition, and career decision making
No matter who you are, when making a career decision it is best to start by considering your strengths and options. As a student with a disability you may also want to consider how your disability or medical condition may impact your choice of career.
You understand your own needs more than anyone. You may have already considered how your disability may impact on the workplace. If not, here are some questions to get you thinking.
-
What aspects of my disability, or medical condition, could other employees misunderstand?
-
What are my requirements for the physical location of the workplace? (Access, ergonomics, equipment.)
-
Do I need any support to complete certain tasks?
-
Are there any activities which I cannot or would prefer not to undertake?
-
Will my disability affect my hours or the structure of the day?
Keep these answers in the back of your mind when considering your career decisions. You may also find the online DVD Beyond Expectations – Profiling People with a Disability in Employment from the TAFE NSW Disability Programs Unit useful. It contains a series of video profiles of people with a range of disabilities, who are making their mark in the workforce.
