Salary and Working Conditions

You should have a contract of employment.

You will receive a pay slip when you are paid – this includes the details of the amount of pay and how much you have been taxed. It is illegal for the employer not to give you a payslip. Always keep your payslips.

There is a minimum rate of pay.

It is your responsibility to ensure your employer knows that you can only work 20 hours per week in term time.

Unpaid work for a short time/trial is illegal.
- Casual work must be paid by the hour (not by the shift).
If you are not being paid regularly, or you are receiving cash in hand with out a payslip, you will know that something is wrong. Here are a few people you can contact for help if you need advice about your pay, contract of employment and working conditions:

Workplace Authority - This organisation helps people to interpret and understand their workplace agreement.
Office of the Employee Ombudsman - Responsible for South Australian workplace relations laws and deals with unfair practices in employment.
Workplace Ombudsman - National in scope and responsible for Federal workplace relations laws.
The Young Workers Legal Service - A free service for anyone under the age of 30 years and able to give legal advice and representation. There are appointments from 10am to 4pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Telephone: 8212 3938.
