Promoting your mature expertise to employers
It is quite common for mature aged students to overlook, and fail to heavily promote, the value of their transferable skills to potential employers. A significant advantage being mature aged is the knowledge and skill that is acquired from a diverse range of life experiences, which are in addition to those gained through your studies. For example from your:
-
previous employment
-
volunteer work
-
family life
-
hobbies and interests
-
general life experience, for example, from being a full time carer of children, involvement in local community, school, church, service clubs etc.
You can use examples from all of these aspects of your life on applications and at the interview. Consider, for example, how your family life may have taught you – resilience, time management, and conflict management.
