Course details
Definitions of environment, place and landscape; concepts of environmental perception. Aboriginal and Colonial European environmental attitudes and value systems; contemporary environmental attitudes, values and philosophical approaches. Perception of environmental risk. Definitions of resources and types of resources. Environmental and social consequences of resource utilisation. Landscape change. Population characteristics and resource implications. Immigration and migration, population growth and demographic trends. Development theories and sustainable development. Wealth creation, power and equity. Human impact on the environment; environmental impacts on human societies. Environmental determinism and possibilism. Environmental influence on human health and wellbeing. Environmental aesthetics, wilderness. Environmental damage and degradation, pollution. Definition of scale and systems. Linkages between local, regional and global scales and systems; physical, social, economic and political systems. The GAIA hypothesis, cumulative impacts and ecologically sustainable development.
