Course details
This course introduces the bible as both sacred text and as literature, specifically a theological narrative. It explores the historical, social and cultural world of selected texts in the First and Second Testament and makes use of contemporary historical-critical and narrative-critical biblical scholarship. The variety of literary genres contained within the scriptures and the shaping of the text as a whole is studied through the focus texts. The Second Testament study situates Jesus in his first century Jewish context and explores the historical development of the gospels. There is a focussed analysis of one of the synoptic gospels. There is recognition of the way interpreters own reality shapes their understanding of the text and the implications of this for contemporary use of scripture.
