Course details
The role of data models in object-oriented system development:
Conceptual design: UML class diagrams; guidelines on choosing between alternative data model constructs. Learning to learn - translation between UML and Entity-Relationship diagrams.
Logical design: Relational model, when and how to normalise; mapping UML diagrams into relational database schemas.
Physical design: Cluster and index structures, general rules of thumb on selection and placement of clusters and indices.
Interactive SQL.
Architecture and technology of database management systems: 3-schema architecture and data independence, transaction management (techniques for concurrency control and recovery), storage management , access control.
Distributed database systems: Architecture; fragmentation and allocation; distributed transaction management; design of distributed databases, client-server architecture.
Object-oriented databases: Shortcomings of relational database systems and major characteristics of object-oriented database systems
General overview of current trends: Active database systems, temporal database systems, data warehouses, databases and the WWW.
