Plagiarism

Plagiarism at university is a serious issue. The University of South Australia has a number of resources for staff and students to assist in understanding what plagiarism is and how to develop ways of avoiding it.


University of South Australia resources 

This section brings together all the resources provided by the University to assist academics and students to understand plagiarism and to develop the skills necessary to recognise and avoid it.

University of South Australia Assessment Policies and Procedures Manual

The University of South Australia has a comprehensive policy framework which guides academic assessment practices. These are gathered together in the Assessment Policy and Procedures Manual. Section 10, Academic Misconduct outlines the University definition of plagiarism and the procedures which must be followed when plagiarism by a student is suspected. 

Plagiarism - teaching strategies

Covers the different forms of plagiarism, how the University of Australia deals with plagiarism and strategies that you can use to avoid it. 

Learning Connection Powerpoint presentation

This Powerpoint presentation (PPT 66kb) can be used with students to explain what plagiarism is, why it is important to acknowledge other sources in assessment tasks, University policies and practices relating to plagiarism and useful resources.

This Referencing resources website provides links to student resources on referencing and plagiarism. These include an Introduction to Referencing learning guide; guides to the different referencing styles, resources on avoiding plagiarism, electronic referencing and frequently asked questions.

Online workshop for students

Avoiding plagiarism 
In this online workshop for students plagiarism is defined and explained. Students can work through a series of strategies to avoid plagiarism with worked examples of how to correctly cite from other sources. 

Additional resources 

A large number of websites on plagiarism and anti-plagiarism can be found through search engines. Some of the sites are commercial in nature, others are educative or informative. Below are some links to educative materials on plagiarism.

Plagiarism Resource Site
Colby, Bates and Bowdoin Colleges (CBB) have jointly developed this site as part of an instruction program to discourage student plagiarism. The site contains two main sections: one dedicated to standalone resources and the other to news items.

Anti-plagiarism strategies for research papers by Robert Harris

The strategies discussed here can be used to combat what some believe is an increasing amount of plagiarism on research papers. By employing these strategies, you can help encourage students to value the assignment and to do their own work. 

AUTC project

Assessing Learning in Australian Universities 2002, CSHE
The website provides advice, resources and strategies designed to assist the efforts of Australian universities to help minimise and respond appropriately to student plagiarism and other forms of cheating. 

Indiana University Bloomington 

The School of Education website is divided into two sections: understanding plagiarism and dealing with plagiarism. A short quiz provides feedback to test your understanding of plagiarism. 

JISC - Joint Information Systems Committee

Links to ‘Plagiarism -A good practice guide’ (PDF 347kb - download Adobe Acrobat) by Jude Carroll and John Appleton. The guide offers teaching and learning-based suggestions, as well as policies and procedures for dealing with plagiarism.
