Please note that these Arabic courses are available to UniSA students only. Students who are not enrolled in a bachelor degree at UniSA may not enrol in Arabic courses.
Arabic is identified as a priority language in many Australian government reports. It is seen as a language of strategic importance to Australia’s national interest especially in the context of recent global events which have highlighted the geo-political importance of the Middle East combined with greater awareness of the business opportunities.
Enrolment at Deakin University
Students must enrol in the Arabic courses at Deakin University, through cross-institutional enrolment. These courses are taught on-line. Students must enrol concurrently in the equivalent UniSA Arabic courses and attend face-to-face language sessions at the Magill campus of UniSA. After successful completion of the courses at Deakin University students must apply for credit at UniSA in line with cross-institutional enrolment policy.
Pre/Corequisite(s):
Only Arabic 1A has no prerequisites. The prerequisites for proceeding to Arabic 1B, 2B, and 3B are respectively Arabic 1A, 2A and 3A courses.
Advanced knowledge:
Students who have successfully studied Arabic at Stage 2 level of the SACE certificate or equivalent must enrol in Arabic 2A. These students may complete a major in Arabic Studies by enrolling in Arabic 2A, 2B, 3A and 3B and LANG 3016 Professional Language Application Project 1 and LANG 3017 Professional Language Application Project 2.

Notes
1. Students must enrol concurrently in the UniSA and Deakin University Arabic language courses; the following are the equivalent courses at Deakin University:

2. On successful completion of the Deakin courses, students must apply for credit at UniSA. Deakin University Arabic 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B are equivalent to UniSA 4.5 unit courses. Deakin University Arabic 3A and 3B are equivalent to UniSA 9 unit courses.
3. Students who have completed SACE Stage 2 Arabic or equivalent normally enrol in Arabic 2A and 2B in their first year.
4. Arabic is available to beginner students as
- a major (36 units made up of 4 x 4.5 unit courses: Arabic 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B plus 2 x 9 unit courses: Arabic 3A, 3B)
- a sub-major (27 units made up of 4 x 4.5 unit courses: Arabic 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B plus 1 x 9 unit course: Arabic 3A)
- a minor (18 units made up of 4 x 4.5 unit courses: Arabic 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B).
5. Arabic is available to continuing students starting at Arabic 2A (eg. students who have completed SACE Stage 2 Arabic or equivalent) as
- a major (36 units made up of 2 x 4.5 unit courses: Arabic 2A, 2B plus 2 x 9 unit courses: Arabic 3A, 3B, plus 2 x 4.5 unit courses: LANG 3016 Professional Language Application Project A and LANG 3017 Professional Language Application Project B)
- a sub-major (27 units made up of 2 x 4.5 unit courses: Arabic 2A, 2B plus 2 x 9 unit courses: Arabic 3A, 3B)
- a minor (18 units made up of 2 x 4.5 unit courses Arabic 2A, 2B, plus 1 x 9 unit course: Arabic 3A).
6. Arabic Studies can also be combined with approved courses from International Studies and taken toward a major/sub-major in Languages and Culture Studies — see Languages and Culture Studies major.
7. The offering of some Level 3 courses will be subject to a minimum number of enrolments and these may be offered in alternate years.
