In the current context of internationalisation, connecting people and ideas is critical. Languages provide a key to making these connections possible. Many of today’s graduates find themselves working with people from other countries, both in Australia and overseas. The study of languages offers students the potential to participate in communication internationally and to gain direct access to the ideas and life of another culture. As such, languages are a valuable adjunct to a wide range of professional studies.
Students may choose a major (eight courses), a sub-major (six courses) or minor (four courses) from one of the languages offered at the University of South Australia (refer to separate entries for Arabic Studies, French Studies, Italian Studies, Japanese Studies, English as an Additional Language majors/sub-majors for details) and combine these with 2 to 4 courses from the International Studies major which allows students to focus on political/historical studies in the region of the target language.
Prerequisite(s):
Only 1A language courses have no prerequisites. The prerequisites for proceeding to 1B, 2B, 3B and 4B are respectively 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A courses. In the Italian sequence, LANG 1027 Italian 2B is the prerequisite for enrolment in LANG 3018 Italy Close-up: Cinematic Identities and Cultures.
Assumed knowledge:
Students who have completed the beginners stream (1A and 1B) or have studied the language at Stage 2 level of the SACE certificate or equivalent must enrol in the 2A and 2B language sequence.
