The courses in this Major/sub-major/minor address Design and Technology in its holistic and diverse forms. Drawing on critical approaches to design and technology students are encouraged to develop their personal strengths in the field and consider applying these to careers in education. The Design and Technology Education Major/sub-major/minor enables students to understand how technology interacts with culture, society and the environment and to develop the skills, knowledge and creativity involved in working with technology.

Design and Technology Education aims to introduce and consolidate the student’s learning in relation to the following:
- an in-depth, multidisciplinary study in Design and Technology:
- the relationship between the individual, schools, society and Design and Technology
- the centrality of design to technological practice and to Design and Technology
- active involvement in the critical analysis of technological processes, systems and artefacts
- development of specific strengths and interests in Design and Technology.

Notes

  1. As well as traditional lectures and tutorials, a large part of the Major/sub-major/minor is practical and workshop-based.
  2. Design and Technology Education is available as a major of 8 courses (36 units), a sub-major of 6 courses (27 units) and a minor of 4 courses (18 units).
  3. The two core courses must be completed by all students who undertake this Major/sub-major/minor. These are EDUC 2031 An Introduction to Design and Technology which is to be studied as the first course of the major and EDUC 2031 Design and Technology: Negotiated Study which will be the final course of the Major/sub-major/minor.
  4. The remainder of the courses may be selected from the optional courses listed above, from the School of Education, the School of Health Sciences and the School of Advanced Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering.
  5. Prerequisites must be observed. Some courses may also be taken as electives with appropriate prerequisites.
  6. HLTH 2001 Human Nutrition requires a reasonable understanding of human physiology.
