The main
ways that we accommodate somebody’s disability is by giving them additional
time for exams. The amount of additional time will vary enormously depending
on what their
disability is and to put them into a smaller venue that’s less overwhelming,
perhaps, than a
arge exam room with hundreds of students.
Many students require additional time to submit their assignments so they
can get
permission to negotiate for a longer extension than would normally be
allowed. So those
are the two commonest ways that we accommodate disability but we also have a
range
of fabulous assistive technology and software for students who have vision
impairments,
for students with hearing impairments or who are profoundly deaf so we
employ Auslan interpreters
as needed.
The other
thing we do is perhaps a student might need to do their placement on a part
time basis
because they can’t manage full time and so we’ll talk to lecturers about
what would still meet the
academic requirements but enable the student to do what they have to do to
get their marks to pass.
