The most
important thing is for people to research properly the course that they’re
planning
to do. Anybody is welcome to enroll in any course; there are no
restrictions on that but for some
people with disabilities they need to find out everything that’s going to be
required of them to
make sure that they’ll be able to cope with that.
For
example someone might enroll in a science type course who is a wheel chair
user but they
haven’t considered that the course will require some field placements in
pretty inaccessible places.
Now we can try to accommodate
that to a degree but possibly we can’t completely accommodate that
and it’s very disappointing for people to get a couple of years into their
course and then find that are
not going to be able to complete.
So researching what the course requires is the most important thing and the
ways they can do that is
by coming to the open days, talk to the staff who run the course and in
particular in relation to
placement issues whether it’s a teaching placement, social work placement,
field work out in the
bush – whatever it happens to be. So that they can think about, with their
disability, is that
going to be manageable?
