Marking the text

Instead of making your own separate set of notes, another possibility is to write on or otherwise mark your text. This saves time, but involves a lower level of active participation on your part and so is a less effective learning strategy. It is also only appropriate if the text is yours and does not belong to someone else or to a library.

Possible ways of marking the text include:

• highlighting or underlining key words or important points (be very selective)
• writing summary notes, comments or questions in the margin or other white spaces
• using ** or other symbols to mark significant sections of text
• using colour-coding (eg vertical line with felt pens) to identify particular aspects of the text
• sticking Post-it markers or other bookmarks onto relevant pages

If it is appropriate to do so, mark your text in ways that are helpful to you.
