First six weeks in the Division of Business

Aim

This degree provides graduates with specialist knowledge in applied finance that is appropriate to the needs of managerial personnel in financial institutions or in areas of business such as treasury, financial planning and small business management, and the potential to proceed to the honours program and other postgraduate study.

The minimum English language entry requirements for international students who speak English as a foreign language are detailed below. It should be noted that some programs may specify higher English language entry requirements. These will be indicated in relevant program documentation.

Applicants are required to meet at least one of the English language entry requirements listed. Possession of one or more of these qualifications, in addition to the academic entry requirements does not, in itself, guarantee a place at the University of South Australia. Applications are considered on an individual basis and selection is competitive.

Where previous study/work experience was conducted in English, the application must be accompanied by certified documentation from the educational institution/employer certifying that the language of instruction/employment was English.

Other Qualifications

·Successful completion of a secondary qualification in Australia within the last two years; or

·Successful completion of at least one year of tertiary study in Australia within the last two years; or

·Successful completion of one year of secondary or tertiary study conducted and completed in English within the last two years in a country in which English is commonly used, as determined by the University (see Note 2).

Note 1: Results from IELTS and TOEFL are valid for two years.

Note 2: The University, through UniSA International, maintains a list of countries where English is commonly used and which would satisfy this criteria. This may include particular educational institutions within a given non-English speaking country where English is the language of instruction.

Knowledge of Mathematical Studies and Specialist Maths at SACE Stage 2 is generally assumed. Nevertheless, students are counselled on entry and where appropriate may be advised to undertake a bridging program.

Content/structure

Students undertake the Division-wide core and then a major in applied finance. In addition, students can undertake the professional sequence in applied finance and must complete 108 units to satisfy the requirements of the program.

Professional Recognition

Graduates of the program satisfy the educational requirements for membership of the Financial Services Institute of Australasia (Finsia). Membership of the Financial Services Institute of Australasia further requires the graduate to be working in the financial services industry.

Fee information

Fees for Domestic students: Commonwealth Supported
Fees for Commonwealth Supported Students are calculated at the course level. Click on individual courses in the schedule below to determine total program fees.

Fees for International students: $AU 18,880 per 1.0 EFTSL for students commencing in 2010.
Fees are calculated on a per Unit basis with 1.0 EFTSL = 36 Units.
Fees for International students are determined one year in advance and are subject to variation.

Rules

The program comprises:

  • a Division Core of eight courses
  • a major of eight courses specific to the program;
  • eight electives
  • Notes

    1. All Division core courses will be offered in both first and second half of the year.

    2. Students are strongly encouraged to complete the Applied Finance professional sequence which comprises:

      ECON 2007 Forecasting and Business Analysis (first half of the year)
      BUSS 3001 Small Enterprise Management (first half of the year)
      BANK 3005 Applied Financial Planning (first half of the year)
      BANK 3006 Financial Modelling (second half of the year)

      One elective course may be chosen from any course offered at the university. All other elective courses should be selected from those offered by the Schools in the Division of Business. However, with the approval of the Program Director, students may choose appropriate courses from outside this Division.

    3. For international students, applicants accepted with an IELTS score less than 7 will be required to enrol in a 2 hour tutorial for COMM 1054 Managing Communication in Business.

    4. Students who have studied either course in the following list, will be deemed to have completed the core course requirement only for the purposes of: transition, program transfer, double degrees and transnational programs where a limited range of courses may be available; and granting of credit for related diploma programs such as SAIBT and Eynesbury.
