Aim
To graduate students who are capable of designing and managing socially and environmentally responsive interior environments which sustain healthy human existence.
Entry requirements
Applicants are required to have one of the following qualifications:
Qualified for the SACE:
- recorded achievement in five SACE subjects taken at Stage 2 level; and
- included at least four Stage 2 subjects which are approved Higher Education Selection Subjects (HESS); and
- obtained a competitive TER;
Completed the equivalent secondary education qualifications as required for University entry under SACE and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
Completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
Completed or partly completed a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
Completed at least four Open Universities Australia (OUA) courses at the appropriate level and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
Completed an award from TAFE or from another registered training organisation at AQF Certificate IV or above and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
Qualified for Special Entry and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
Completed the University Foundation Studies program.
Special entry provisions may also apply for ATSI applicants.
English language entry requirements
For international applicants for whom English is a second language, the minimum English language requirements are:
International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic): Minimum score of 6.0 in Reading and Writing subscores and minimum overall score of 6.0 obtained within the last two years or corresponding results from an equivalent test such as TOEFL or the appropriate Academic English language level delivered at CELUSA; or
Successful completion of a secondary qualification in Australia within the last two years; or
Successful completion of at least one year of tertiary study in Australia within the last two years; or
Successful completion of one year of secondary or tertiary study conducted and completed in English within the last two years in a country in which:
- English is an official language; or
- English is commonly used, as determined by the University.
Content/structure
The program is a four year full-time or part-time equivalent program. Year 1 introduces students to basic skills and concepts and establishes a theoretical framework. Year 2 and Year 3 develop competence in core areas. Year 4 expands the intellectual and professional areas of the program and provides scope for specialisation through electives.
The program requires completion of courses comprising 144 units.
Professional Recognition
Graduates of this program are eligible for Associate Membership of the Design Institute of Australia. The Bachelor of Interior Architecture does not confer qualifications in Architecture and the South Australian Architects Act legislation (1939) restricts the use of the title `Architect' to those registered by the Architects Board of South Australia.
Honours
The degree may be awarded with Honours for meritorious performance in the program. Selection will be made in accordance with the University procedures. See also Rule 5.
Fee information
Fees for Domestic students: Commonwealth SupportedFees for Commonwealth Supported Students are calculated at the course level. Click on individual courses in the schedule below to determine total program fees.
Fees for International students: $AU 19,500 per 1.0 EFTSL for students commencing in 2010.
Fees are calculated on a per Unit basis with 1.0 EFTSL = 36 Units.
Fees for International students are determined one year in advance and are subject to variation.
Program requirements
Rules
- Students progress through the program by years. They must complete one year before undertaking courses from the next year. With the permission of the Program Director, students may carry one course failure only (other than a Design Studio or Interior Architecture Studio) forward to the next year.
- Within a the second and third year students may choose to vary the sequence of study but are not permitted to take two Design Studios or Interior Architecture Studios concurrently.
- A total of 9 units must conform with the Broadening Undergraduate Education Matrix as Contrasting Studies and must include ARCH 3048 Indigenous Design Perspectives.
- Students must normally complete the degree within 4 years of full-time study (or its equivalent of part-time study) from the date of their initial enrolment, not including any periods of approved leave of absence or enforced suspension.
- Students invited to undertake Honours are required to undertake the courses ARCH 4013 LLS Honours Research 1 and ARCH 4014 LLS Honours Research 2 in lieu of Elective 1 and Elective 2.
Notes
- Work experience placements should be undertaken in Years 2 and 3 as part of Studios 3, 4, 5 and 6, however other prior work experience of comparable duration may be used as the basis for assessment of this component with the permission of the Program Director.
- Students are required to complete 3 Elective courses (unless enrolled in Honours). These are designed to extend and expand students' intellectual and professional abilities in core and cognate areas of the curriculum and to provide scope for individual development in particular areas of professional and academic interest. A selection of electives will be offered each year, depending on staff availability and student demand.

Students who have a Grade Point Average of 4.5 or more and wish to independently pursue a topic of interest not available in the electives offered in any one study period may choose either a research- or project-based individual elective with the approval of the Program Director.
