Note that Professor Peter Buckskin is responsible for the Aboriginal Studies component of this program and Mr Michael O'Donoghue is responsible for the Education component.

Aim

To prepare intending middle/secondary school teachers as specialists in Australian Studies and a second teaching area who are skilled, committed and flexible professionals with the capacities to promote effective and inclusive learning in a variety of education settings and a range of community contexts.

Entry requirements

Applicants are required to have one of the following qualifications:

Qualified for SACE; and
   Recorded achievement in five SACE subjects taken at stage 2 level; and
   Included at least four Stage 2 subjects which are approved Higher Education Selection Subjects (HESS); and
   Obtained a competitive TER;

Completed the equivalent secondary education qualifications as required for University entry under SACE and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;

Completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma, obtaining a minimum score of 24 points and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;

Completed or partly completed a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;

Completed at least four Open Universities Australia (OUA) courses at the appropriate level and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;

Completed an award from TAFE or from another registered training organisation at AQF Certificate IV or above and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;

Qualified for Special Entry and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;

Completed the University Foundation Studies program.

Applicants are advised that a successful criminal history screening clearance is required for all students prior to their undertaking any professional experience/practicum placement that involves contact with minors (under 18 years of age). Information on the procedure to be followed for obtaining clearance will be provided with the letter of offer or may be viewed at the School of Education criminal history screening web page. These placements form a compulsory part of the program. A successful clearance may also be required for other courses, eg to enter any school, pre-school or childcare centre for any reason, including on placement, observation or visits, unless the students are already registered teachers.

The program is equivalent to four years of full-time study, that is 144 units.

The emphasis in the first two years is upon Australian Studies with the Education Studies being emphasised in the second half of the program.

Professional Recognition

Graduates will meet the academic requirement for registration as teachers in South Australia. However, applicants should note that there are other criteria determining eligibility for registration by the Teachers Registration Board of South Australia, which are outlined in the Teachers Registration and Standards Act 2004 and Teachers Registration and Standards. Regulations 2005.

Notes

  1. Students may choose to complete:
    - a sub-major of 27 units (6 x 4.5 unit courses)
    - or a minor sequence of 18 units (4 x 4.5 unit courses) and a sequence of 9 units (2 x 4.5 unit courses).
    These must be chosen from courses that are included under what are designated 'Learning Areas' within the schooling sector and for which courses about how to teach those learning areas are provided within this degree (see Note 3 for the list of options).
    Currently the learning areas in schools which can be studied at this University include:
    Arts (dance, drama, music or visual arts), English, Mathematics, Studies of Society and Environment (including accounting, business studies, economics, geography, history, legal studies, social studies), Design and technology (including agriculture, home economics, information technology, design and technology), Science, or Languages other than English.
  2. Students should note that employers are likely to deem a sub-major in a learning area as a necessary prerequisite for teaching that learning area to Year 12; similarly an 18 unit sequence is likely to be the requirement for teaching to Year 10 and a 9 unit sequence to year 8; students are urged to take advice from the Program Director within the School of Education before making their selection of sub-major/minor to ensure that they are choosing wisely and establishing a strong case for future employment within the teaching profession.
  3. The options from which students may select 'Teaching the Second Learning Area 1 & 2' are listed below. The option selected must relate to the student's choice of sub-major or minors; both courses must come from the same Learning Area; students are recommended to check their choice with the relevant Course Coordinator or Program Director.
