Aim
To provide students with
- the skills and understandings which will enable them to work effectively as professionals in a range of Indigenous contexts
- appropriate theoretical frameworks within which they are able to apply understandings and critical analysis gained from studying courses that provide Aboriginal world views.
Entry requirements
A bachelor degree in Aboriginal Studies from a recognised higher education institution or a closely related field from a recognised higher education institution.
Indigenous applicants may be accepted on the basis of experience working in Indigenous communities or organisations where their role has provided them with the knowledge and skills which would be expected of a graduate of a Bachelor of Aboriginal or Indigenous Studies.
In addition, International students who speak English as a foreign language must have obtained one of the following standards within the last two years prior to admission:
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS): overall score of 6.5 with writing sub-score of 6 or TOEFL equivalent; or
- A tertiary qualification completed in Australia within the last two years at an acceptable academic level; or
- Two years of tertiary study conducted in English within the last two years in a country in which English is an official language.
Content/structure
This is an 18 unit program which consists of four 4.5 unit courses.
Fee information
Fees for Domestic students: Commonwealth SupportedFees for Commonwealth Supported Students are calculated at the course level. Click on individual courses in the schedule below to determine total program fees.
Fees for International students: $AU 7,550 per 0.5 EFTSL for students commencing in 2010.
Fees are calculated on a per Unit basis with 1.0 EFTSL = 36 Units.
Fees for International students are determined one year in advance and are subject to variation.

Credit transfer
On completion of the Graduate Certificate in Aboriginal Studies students will be eligible for entry to the Graduate Diploma in Aboriginal Studies. 18 units of credit will be granted.
Rules
- Indigenous students who are not graduates will be expected to participate in a support program provided by the Indigenous Student Services of the David Unaipon College of Indigenous Education and Research.
Notes
- This program forms part of a nested suite of programs:
Graduate Certificate in Aboriginal Studies: 2 study periods part-time (18 units)
Graduate Diploma in Aboriginal Studies: 1 study period full-time or part-time equivalent, additional to the Graduate Certificate (total 36 units)
Master of Aboriginal Studies: 1 study period full-time or part-time equivalent, additional to the Graduate Diploma (total 54 units). - The courses may be completed in any order.
- All courses are taught using a combination of compulsory face to face intensive 3-5 day workshop(s) supplemented by online discussion groups and materials.
- External students will have the option to participate in online discussion.
