Aim

The program aims to graduate students into the practice of architecture who demonstrate professional design, communication and management skills in response to technical, environmental and cultural issues in the built environment.

Entry requirements

Entry into the Master of Architecture program is competitive, based on academic merit, and subject to quota.

Entry requires successful completion of the Bachelor of Architectural Studies program at the University of South Australia with a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0, or an approved equivalent program and GPA including either:

English language entry requirements

For international applicants for whom English is a second language, the minimum English language requirements are:

International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic): Minimum score of 6.0 in Reading and Writing subscores and minimum overall score of 6.5 obtained within the last two years or corresponding results from an equivalent test such as TOEFL or the appropriate Academic English language level delivered at CELUSA; or

Successful completion of a tertiary qualification at diploma level or above completed in Australia within the last two years; or

Successful completion of two or more years of tertiary study at diploma level or above conducted and completed in English within the last five years in a country in which:

Where the study in English was more than five years ago, this requirement may be satisfied by subsequent and recent work experience of two or more years duration in a setting where English is the language of business subject to satisfactory evidence as determined by the Program Director.

Content/structure

The Master of Architecture is a two year full time or part-time equivalent program comprising professional studies in the field of Architecture. Year 1 develops competence in core course streams and broadens awareness and develops specialisation through undertaking of electives. Year 2 expands the intellectual and professional areas of the program and provides scope for research related to complex individual design projects.

Courses are arranged according to Subject Areas related to the relevant AACA National Competency Standards in Architecture and the RAIA Education Policy Performance Criteria.

The program requires completion of courses comprising 72 units.

Professional Recognition

This program is accredited by the Architects Board of South Australia, endorsing the architecture qualifications of graduates required for registration as an architect. The Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA) recognises the program, endorsing architecture qualifications required for membership of the RAIA, including student and graduate membership.

Fee information

Fees for Domestic students: Commonwealth Supported
Fees for Commonwealth Supported Students are calculated at the course level. Click on individual courses in the schedule below to determine total program fees.

Fees for International students: $AU 20,900 per 1.0 EFTSL for students commencing in 2010.
Fees are calculated on a per Unit basis with 1.0 EFTSL = 36 Units.
Fees for International students are determined one year in advance and are subject to variation.

Rules

  1. Within a year students may choose to vary the sequence of study but are not permitted to take two Design Studios or Architectural Design Studios concurrently.
  2. Students must normally complete the degree within 4 study periods of full time study (or its equivalent of part-time study) from the date of their initial enrolment, not including any periods of approved leave of absence or enforced suspension.

Notes

  1. Electives are designed to extend and expand students' intellectual and professional abilities in core and cognate areas of the curriculum and to provide scope for individual development in particular areas of professional and academic interest. A selection of electives will be offered each year, depending on staff availability and student demand. Students enrolled in the Master of Architecture Program may select from the following list of electives, or as approved by the Program Director. Where these electives are also offered to Bachelor degree students, additional assessment criteria will apply to those students undertaking the elective as part of the Masters program.

  2. Students intending to enrol in an advanced research degree are advised to select ARCH 4043 Architectural Research 1 and ARCH 4044 Architectural Research 2 as their electives.
  3. Students who have a Grade Point Average of 4.5 or more and wish to independently pursue a topic of interest not available in the electives offered in any one study period may choose the following course as either a research or project based individual elective with the approval of the Program Director:

  4. Each design studio will require students to demonstrate an ability to integrate all other subject areas of the program into the design process.
