Aim

The program is designed to provide medical radiation professionals with the mechanism to develop a new professional area in medical sonography and, if desired, to undertake research in this specialist area.

Entry requirements

Applicants should be qualified as medical radiation professionals with a bachelor degree or equivalent award.  Normally applicants will have a comprehensive knowledge of their own professional area.  Applicants with other qualifications and appropriate demonstrated exeperience equivalent to the above may be considered for entry.

In addition, international students who speak English as a foreign language must satisfy the following:

International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic):  Overall score of 6.5 obtained within the last two years or corresponding results from an equivalent test such as TOEFL or the appropriate Academic English language level delivered at CELUSA;
OR
Successful completion of a secondary qualification in Australia within the last two years;
OR
Successful completion of at least one year of tertiary study in Australia within the last two years;
OR
Successful completion of one year of secondary or tertiary study conducted and completed in English within the last two years in a country in which English is an official language as determined by the University.

Where the study in English was more than five years ago, this requirement may be satisfied by subsequent and recent work experience of at least two years duration in a setting where English is the language of business subject to satisfactory evidence as determined by the University.

Content/structure

There are two designated course groups.  Students will need to complete courses totalling 54 units, including all of Group 1 courses and courses totalling 18 units from Group 2 or other electives as approved by the Program Director.

Professional Recognition

Graduates of the program are eligible to apply for full professional accreditation from the Australasian Sonographer Accreditation Registry (ASAR) under the appropriate Sonography category.

Rules

  1. Credit for previous studies or exemption from work within courses may be granted in accordance with University policy.  Maximum credit allowed is normally one third of the total units of the program.  Students with a completed or partially completed Graduate Diploma in the same discipline may be eligible for more than one third credit.
  2. The program is offered on a part-time basis over a minimum of 2 years, and is offered only by external delivery.

Notes

  1. Credit will be given for the courses Ultrasound Physics and Instrumentation 1 and Ultrasound Physics and Instrumentation 2 if the student can provide proof of completion of the Diploma of Medical Ultrasonography Part 1, awarded by the Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine, within 5 years prior to enrolment in the program.
  2. Ultrasound Physics and Instrumentation 2 may be studied in the same period as the course Breast Sonography if it has not been previously completed.
  3. Students may enrol in the course Mammography as internal or external, but all students are required to attend an intensive one-week workshop on campus.
  4. A total of 2200 hours documented scanning experience (verified by supervisor) is required over the program and is to be submitted as part of the assessment for the final course, Clinical Sonography Portfolio.
  5. For the courses Musculoskeletal Sonography 1 and 2 a knowledge of general medical sonography scanning principles will be assumed.  Co-requisite is that the student should be an accredited medical sonographer and working in an environment where diagnostic medical sonography is performed.
