Aim

The program aims to develop skilled, committed and flexible Design and Technology Education professionals who have the knowledge and pedagogical skills to promote effective and inclusive learning in secondary and middle school education settings.

Entry requirements

Applicants are required to have one of the following qualifications:

Qualified for the SACE:

Completed the equivalent secondary education qualifications as required for University entry under SACE and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;

Completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;

Completed or partly completed a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;

Completed at least four Open Universities Australia (OUA) courses at the appropriate level and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;

Completed an award from TAFE or from another registered training organisation at AQF Certificate IV or above and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements; 

Qualified for Special Entry and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;

Completed the University Foundation Studies program.

Applicants are advised that a successful criminal history screening clearance is required for all students prior to their undertaking any professional experience/practicum placement that involves contact with minors (under 18 years of age). Information on the procedure to be followed for obtaining clearance will be provided with the letter of offer or may be viewed at the School of Education criminal history screening web page. These placements form a compulsory part of the program. A successful clearance may also be required for other courses, eg to enter any school, pre-school or childcare centre for any reason, including on placement, observation or visits, unless the students are already registered teachers.

Content/structure

This program requires the completion of 144 units of study over four years full-time or equivalent part-time. Students may choose to specialise in either Design Technology Education or Home Economics Education options. Opportunity is also provided for study across both specialisations if desired. Students will be expected to study across a range of educational settings including TAFE SA: Marleston and Regency campuses (credit for these courses will be granted by UniSA ), University of South Australia: School of Education, Magill and Mawson Lakes campus, School of Mechanical Engineering (Mawson Lakes Campus), School of Art (City West Campus), School of Health Sciences, City East Campus.

Throughout the program students will undertake school placement practicums in Middle School and Secondary settings. Applicants need to ensure they can fulfil the full-time commitment required during the placements.

Professional Recognition

Graduates will meet the academic requirement for registration as teachers in South Australia. However, applicants should note that there are other criteria determining eligibility for registration by the Teachers Registration Board of South Australia, which are outlined in the Teachers Registration and Standards Act 2004 and Teachers Registration and Standards. Regulations 2005.

Honours

The degree may be awarded with Honours for meritorious performance. Selection will be made in accordance with the University procedures. See also Rule 1.

Fee information

Fees for Domestic students: Commonwealth Supported
Fees for Commonwealth Supported Students are calculated at the course level. Click on individual courses in the schedule below to determine total program fees.

Fees for International students: $AU 16,000 per 1.0 EFTSL for students commencing in 2010.
Fees are calculated on a per Unit basis with 1.0 EFTSL = 36 Units.
Fees for International students are determined one year in advance and are subject to variation.

Rules

  1. The degree may be awarded with Honours for meritorious performance. Students will be selected in accordance with University policy. Honours students will enrol in EDUC 4119 Par 4 Honours: Research Methods and Project (Primary, Middle) Part A and EDUC 4120 Par 4 Honours: Research Methods and Project (Primary, Middle) Part B in place of EDUC 4163 Professional Community, Identity and Social Justice and EDUC 4056 Professional Applications and Reflection 4 (Primary, Middle) in Year 4.

Notes

  1. Students enrol in the TAFE courses concurrently. Students should apply for external credit on completion of each TAFE course.

  2. Students in the Design and Technology strand will be granted 36 units of credit in total, on the successful completion of the eight TAFE courses. TAFE fees apply.

  3. Electives may be selected from minors within any relevant undergraduate course or TAFE courses currently offered in the LBDT program in consultation with the Program Director.

  4. To fulfil the Aboriginal Studies BUGE (Broadening Undergraduate Education) requirement students will select one of the following courses from The Unaipon School:
