Aim

The program aims to provide an in-depth knowledge of materials engineering to prepare graduates for professional careers in minerals, mining, manufacturing and processing industries.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic): Minimum score of 6.0 in Reading and Writing subscores and minimum overall score of 6.0 obtained within the last two years or corresponding results from an equivalent test such as TOEFL or the appropriate Academic English language level delivered at CELUSA; or

Content/structure

The program has a foundational first year that includes an introduction to mechanical, civil and electrical engineering to give a broad engineering knowledge so that graduates have an extensive understanding of basic fundamentals and an appreciation of the diversity of engineering. Courses in second and third years are arranged to give the program a practice based emphasis that provides engineering knowledge in a range of areas including materials characterisation, materials chemistry, surface engineering, thermal processing and metallurgy, polymer science, and ceramics and composites. The fourth year includes a major individual, industry based project in materials engineering.  

Professional Recognition

This program is professionally accredited by Engineers Australia and is designed to meet the requirements for graduate membership of Engineers Australia and comparable international institutions such as the Institution of Civil Engineers (UK).

Honours

Students achieving a credit level average at the end of the third year will be invited to enrol in the honours project in the fourth year. Successful completion of the program and the honours project may lead to the award of a degree with honours.

Notes

  1. It is a requirement of Engineers Australia that students complete a minimum period of 12 weeks of industrial experience in a relevant industry prior to graduation. Assessment in the course Industrial Experience will remain incomplete until the student submits a written report and receives a pass.
  2. This program includes elective courses. A list of elective courses is available from the UniSA website via http://www.unisanet.unisa.edu.au/programs. The selection will be subject to availability and satisfaction of pre-requisite requirements.
