Aim

The program aims to prepare educators who are professionally competent and primarily concerned with learners' wellbeing and are committed to social justice, futures thinking, sustainability, education for community living, and sound pedagogical reasoning that is enquiry based.

Entry requirements

Applicants are required to have one of the following qualifications:

Qualified for the SACE:

Completed the equivalent secondary education qualifications as required for University entry under SACE and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;

Completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;

Completed or partly completed a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;

Completed at least four Open Universities Australia (OUA) courses at the appropriate level and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;

Completed an award from TAFE or from another registered training organisation at AQF Certificate IV or above and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements; 

Qualified for Special Entry and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;

Completed the University Foundation Studies program.

Applicants are advised that a successful criminal history screening clearance is required for all students prior to their undertaking any professional experience/practicum placement that involves contact with minors (under 18 years of age). Information on the procedure to be followed for obtaining clearance will be provided with the letter of offer or may be viewed at the School of Education criminal history screening web page. These placements form a compulsory part of the program. A successful clearance may also be required for other courses, eg to enter any school, pre-school or childcare centre for any reason, including on placement, observation or visits, unless the students are already registered teachers.

English language entry requirements

For international applicants for whom English is a second language, the minimum English language requirements are:

International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic): Minimum score of 6.0 in Reading and Writing subscores and minimum overall score of 6.5 obtained within the last two years or corresponding results from an equivalent test such as TOEFL or the appropriate Academic English language level delivered at CELUSA; or

Successful completion of a secondary qualification in Australia within the last two years; or

Successful completion of at least one year of tertiary study in Australia within the last two years; or

Successful completion of one year of secondary or tertiary study conducted and completed in English within the last two years in a country in which:

Content/structure

The program is equivalent to four years of full-time study, that is, 144 units. The program includes studies in core courses, professional application and reflection courses (PAR), learning area courses and general studies courses in two discipline areas. At least one course in Aboriginal Studies and one course in educating students with special needs must be taken during the program.

Professional Recognition

Graduates will meet the academic requirement for registration as teachers in South Australia. However, applicants should note that there are other criteria determining eligibility for registration by the Teachers Registration Board of South Australia, which are outlined in the Teachers Registration and Standards Act 2004 and Teachers Registration and Standards. Regulations 2005.

Honours

This degree may be awarded with Honours for meritorious performance in the program. Students will be selected on academic merit at the end of their third year in accordance with University policy.

Fee information

Fees for Domestic students: Commonwealth Supported
Fees for Commonwealth Supported Students are calculated at the course level. Click on individual courses in the schedule below to determine total program fees.

Fees for International students: $AU 16,000 per 1.0 EFTSL for students commencing in 2010.
Fees are calculated on a per Unit basis with 1.0 EFTSL = 36 Units.
Fees for International students are determined one year in advance and are subject to variation.

Rules

  1. Students will be selected into the Honours stream in accordance with University policy. Honours students will take in their fourth year EDUC 4119 Par 4 Honours: Research Methods and Project (Primary, Middle) Part A, EDUC 4120 Par 4 Honours: Research Methods and Project (Primary, Middle) Part B in place of Professional Pathway Elective and EDUC 4056 Professional Applications and Reflection 4 (Primary, Middle) (PAR 4).
  2. The prerequisites for EDUC 2011 Professional Applications and Reflection 2 (Primary, Middle) (PAR 2) are EDUC 1022 Professional Applications and Reflection 1 (Primary, Middle) (PAR 1) and 18 units of Curriculum Studies courses (see Note 7). The prerequisites for EDUC 3048 Professional Applications and Reflection 3 (Primary, Middle) PAR 3 are EDUC 2011  Professional Applications and Reflection 2 (Primary, Middle) PAR 2 and 18 units of Curriculum Studies courses (see Note 6). The pre/corequisites for EDUC 4056 Professional Applications and Reflection 4 (Primary, Middle) PAR 4 are EDUC 3048 Professional Applications and Reflection 2 (Primary, Middle) PAR 2, Professional Pathway Elective (see Note 5) and 27 units of Curriculum Studies courses.
  3. The prerequisite for EDUC 4143 Studies in Science and Mathematics Education 2 is EDUC 4141 Studies in Science and Mathematics Education 2.
  4. General Study: at least 2 courses must be taken from each of 2 learning areas selected from: Social & Cultural Studies; Language and Literature; Mathematical and Natural Sciences and the Environment; Health, Human Growth and Movement; Arts, Design & Technology. A minimum of 8 general studies courses must be taken in total. No more than two courses may be taken at level 1 in each learning area.

Notes

  1. Professional Applications and Reflection 1, 2, 3 and 4 (Primary, Middle) are sometimes described as PAR 1, 2, 3, 4. The first year practicum (PAR 1) will provide opportunities for students to visit and observe in a number of educational settings. The second year practicum (PAR 2) provides students with further opportunities to work in educational settings and to take on more responsibilities as educators. In their third year, students undertake a 9 unit practicum course (PAR 3) and spend six weeks in a 6-9 learning setting undertaking teaching duties. This practicum is linked with the Middle Schooling and Curriculum Integration courses that run in the same study period. In SP5 further teaching and learning is developed in EDUC 3055 Inclusive Education: Children with Special Needs. In the fourth year students will be required to take a Pathways course in the First Half that is linked to the Second Half practicum (PAR 4). In their final year students develop further their teaching skills. Their work in an educational setting is connected to their chosen pathway (Professional Pathways) and EDUC 4144 The Emerging Self: Wellbeing and Identity. EDUC 4056 Professional Applications and Reflection 4 will be in a 3-5 setting.
  2. As part of the PAR 4 practicum students will visit, work-shadow and contribute to the operation of settings others than schools. These settings can include hospitals, environmental organisations and educational sections of local government councils.
  3. Curriculum Integration may be selected from a number of courses that explore different combinations of traditional learning areas. These may not all be available in any one year. These courses will be identified in the program handbook.
  4. The required Broadening Undergraduate Education (BUGE) Aboriginal Studies course must be chosen from the following courses offered by The Unaipon School:

  5. The Professional Pathway Elective is an elective course from the education field of study. Students may choose to use this course to further a learning area study, their teaching specialisation, or to pursue an interest in education. A list of (some) options will be included in the program handbook.
