Aim
The Bachelor of Sustainable Environments has been designed to meet the needs of government, business and industry, to supply graduates with a broad knowledge of environmental sustainability and provide specialisation in one of three awards.
Entry requirements
Applicants are required to have one of the following qualifications:
- Qualifies for the SACE; and
- Recorded achievement is five SACE subjects taken at Stage 2 level; and
- Included at least four Stage 2 subjects which are approved Higher Education Selection Subjects (HESS)
Alternatively, the minimum educational requirements may be met by those who have one to the following qualifications:
- Completed the equivalent secondary education qualifications as required for university entry under SACE;
- Completed or partly completed a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution;
- Completed at least four Open Learning Australia (OLA) courses at the appropriate level;
- Completed a recognised diploma or associate diploma from TAFE or Certificate IV level course;
- Completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma;
- Qualified for Special Entry
- Completed the University Foundation program
Special requirements
- This program involves a professional work placement equivalent to 4.5 units
- The program has no prerequisites.
- Entry via an approved TAFE qualification may be possible.
For international applicants for whom English is a second language, the minimum English language requirements are:
International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic): Obtain a minimum overall score of 6.0 obtained within the last two years or corresponding results from an equivalent test such as TOEFL or the appropriate Academic English language level delivered at CELUSA; or
Successful completion of a secondary qualification in Australia within the last two years; or
Successful completion of at least one year of tertiary study in Australia within the last two years; or
Successful completion of one year of secondary or tertiary study conducted and completed in English within the last two years in a country in which:
- English is an official language; or
- English is commonly used, as determined by the University.
Content/structure
Students are required to complete 108 units of study for the successful completion of the program. The program consists of a first year which is common to all four awards. This lays a foundation to the following two years in which one of four awards may be further pursued. Students may elect to change awards at the end of year one. The awards are Geospatial Information System, Geographical and Earth Systems, Environmental Protection and Management and Biodiversity and Park Management.
Professional Recognition
Graduates of this program will be eligible for membership of the Spatial Sciences Institute (SSI), and after a period of employment will be eligible to apply for general certification as a Practising Spatial Scientist. Further study and further work experience may lead to certification a specialist in one of the six commissions of the SSI. Graduates of the Geospatial Information Systems Award will, after appropriate industry experience, be recognised by the SA and reciprocating Boards of Surveyors and suitable to be registered as a Graduate Surveyor.
Honours
Students completing this degree with an average grade of credit or above are eligible to apply for admission to the Bachelor of Applied Science (Honours) (Biodiversity, Environmental and Park Management) degree offered by the School of Natural and Built Environments.
Fee information
Fees for Domestic students: Commonwealth SupportedFees for Commonwealth Supported Students are calculated at the course level. Click on individual courses in the schedule below to determine total program fees.
Fees for International students: $AU 19,500 per 1.0 EFTSL for students commencing in 2010.
Fees are calculated on a per Unit basis with 1.0 EFTSL = 36 Units.
Fees for International students are determined one year in advance and are subject to variation.
Program requirements
Notes
- The program is offered on a three-year full-time basis. The program can also be taken on a part-time basis.
- Credit will not be granted for more than 66% of the total units of the program.
- Electives:
- Some electives will only be offered if sufficient enrolments are received, so may not be available in all years.
- There may be limited numbers of enrolment places in some field-based electives.
- Prerequisites may apply to some electives
- Additional electives are available from the Schools of Mathematics and Statistics, Pharmacy and Medical Sciences and International Business, following approval of the Program Director
- A number of courses include a field component (which will vary in length and distance travelled and may incur additional charges)
- These courses are normally held in Study Period 1 (Summer School).
- The course Ecotourism: Sustainable Environments and Community is offered every alternate year, (available even years only).
- The course Geomorphology from Space is normally offered in Study Period 6 (mid semester break) and is taught by intensive mode.
