Aim

The program aims to provide a flexible, comprehensive and highly relevant inservice education for practitioners at a graduate level who are working as professional educators and trainers.

Entry requirements

Admission to the program will normally require completion of a three year undergraduate degree in any discipline plus at least two years of experience in an educational or early childhood care setting or equivalent.

International students may undertake the TESOL specialisation in conjunction with the Master of Education program. This applies only to the TESOL specialisation. IELTS minimum score of 6.0 in Reading and Writing subscores and minimum overall score of 6.5.  Please see Note 5 for further information concerning the English language entry requirements. Note: the TESOL specialisation is available to all students.

Content/structure

The program requires the completion of courses totalling 18 units, studied over one year of part-time study. Students complete 18 units within one of the specialisations. The award is available on a part-time basis only.

Note: this award does not lead to registration as a teacher by the Teachers Registration Board.

Fee information

Fees for Domestic students: Commonwealth Supported
Fees for Commonwealth Supported Students are calculated at the course level. Click on individual courses in the schedule below to determine total program fees.

Fees for International students: $AU 8,000 per 0.5 EFTSL for students commencing in 2010.
Fees are calculated on a per Unit basis with 1.0 EFTSL = 36 Units.
Fees for International students are determined one year in advance and are subject to variation.

Credit transfer

Graduates of the Graduate Certificate in Education in either the Adult, Vocational and Workplace Learning Specialisation or the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Specialisation will normally be granted 18 units of credit in the Graduate Diploma of Education (Adult, Vocational and Workplace Learning).

  4. The award can be completed on a part-time basis only. 
  5. The TESOL Specialisation is available to international students in conjunction with the Master of Education. For international applicants for whom English is a second language, the minimum English language requirements are:
    International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic): Minimum score of 6.0 in Reading and Writing subscores and minimum overall score of 6.5 obtained within the last two years or corresponding results from an equivalent test such as TOEFL or the appropriate Academic English language level delivered at CELUSA; or
    Successful completion of a tertiary qualification at diploma level or above completed in Australia within the last two years; or
    Successful completion of two or more years of tertiary study at diploma level or above conducted and completed in English within the last five years in a country in which:
    -English is an official language; or
    -English is commonly used, as determined by the University.
    Where the study in English was more than five years ago, this requirement may be satisfied by subsequent and recent work experience of two or more years duration in a setting where English is the language of business subject to satisfactory evidence as determined by the Program Director.
  6. Applicants are advised that a successful criminal history screening clearance is required for all students prior to their undertaking any professional experience/practicum placement that involves contact with minors (under 18 years of age). Information on the procedure to be followed for obtaining clearance may be viewed at the School of Education criminal history screening web page. A successful clearance may also be required for other courses, eg to enter any school, pre-school or childcare centre for any reason, including on placement, observation or visits, unless the students are already registered teachers. These placements may form part of the program in the TESOL Specialisation.
  7. In the Career Development Specialisation 4.5 units of credit (EDUC 4183 Career Counselling Skills) can be granted for completion of the Certificate IV Career Development; or 4.5 units of credit (EDUC 4185 Career Development Theory and Principles) can be granted for completion of Australian Career Development Studies Component 3. A maximum of 4.5 units only can be claimed.
