Aim
The aim of the Bachelor of Arts (Aboriginal Studies), Bachelor of Social Work is to prepare students for social work practice by developing knowledge and skills which are based in theory from the social, political and behavioural sciences, social work theory and practice, combined with knowledge of Indigenous cultures and practices relevant to working with Indigenous peoples and their communities.
Entry requirements
Applicants are required to have one of the following qualifications:
Qualified for the SACE:
- recorded achievement in five SACE subjects taken at Stage 2 level; and
- included at least four Stage 2 subjects which are approved Higher Education Selection Subjects (HESS); and
- obtained a competitive TER;
Completed the equivalent secondary education qualifications as required for University entry under SACE and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
Completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
Completed or partly completed a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
Completed at least four Open Universities Australia (OUA) courses at the appropriate level and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
Completed an award from TAFE or from another registered training organisation at AQF Certificate IV or above and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
Qualified for Special Entry and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
Completed the University Foundation Studies program.
Special entry provisions may also apply for ATSI applicants.
English language entry requirements
For international applicants for whom English is a second language, the minimum English language requirements are:
International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic): Minimum score of 6.0 in Reading and Writing subscores and minimum overall score of 6.0 obtained within the last two years or corresponding results from an equivalent test such as TOEFL or the appropriate Academic English language level delivered at CELUSA; or
Successful completion of a secondary qualification in Australia within the last two years; or
Successful completion of at least one year of tertiary study in Australia within the last two years; or
Successful completion of one year of secondary or tertiary study conducted and completed in English within the last two years in a country in which:
- English is an official language; or
- English is commonly used, as determined by the University.
Content/structure
The program has a strong emphasis on social work knowledge and skills embedded in an understanding of Aboriginal peoples experiences of the historic, economic, cultural, social and political context of post contact Australia and an approach to culturally sensitive practice which reflects contemporary understandings of reconciliation, human rights and self determination.
Professional Recognition
Graduates of this program are eligible for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers.
Honours
The Bachelor of Social Work may be awarded with honours.
Fee information
Fees for Domestic students: Commonwealth SupportedFees for Commonwealth Supported Students are calculated at the course level. Click on individual courses in the schedule below to determine total program fees.
Fees for International students: $AU 17,500 per 1.0 EFTSL for students commencing in 2010.
Fees are calculated on a per Unit basis with 1.0 EFTSL = 36 Units.
Fees for International students are determined one year in advance and are subject to variation.
Program requirements
Credit transfer
Students who have successfully completed a TAFE Certificate IV in Aboriginal Community Management are eligible for 9 units of credit in the first year of the Bachelor of Arts (Aboriginal Studies), Bachelor of Social Work. Students who have successfully completed a TAFE Diploma in Community Services are eligible for 18 units of credit. Students who have successfully completed either a TAFE Diploma of Justice Administration or a TAFE Advanced Diploma of Policing or a TAFE Advanced Diploma in Community Services are eligible for 36 units of credit.
Students who have successfully completed a University of South Australia Associate Degree in Correctional Administration (MTCA) are eligible for 36 units of credit in the Bachelor of Arts (Aboriginal Studies), Bachelor of Social Work.

The schedule is for five years of full-time study or the part-time equivalent.

The program is designed to graduate professional social workers who can function effectively in demanding environments. It satisfies professional and employer requirements through its content and its assessment processes. Students are advised that the program does require consistent participation in a wide range of potentially challenging classroom, assessment and field activities.

The first, second and third years of the Social Work courses are in common with the Bachelor of Social Science.

In Year 4 students will select one of the following courses in the second half of the year:

NURS 1036 Cultural Perspectives on Health -
Field Education consists of 980 hours of supervised placement to be undertaken during the third and fourth years. Some Field Education placements may require students to hold a current drivers licence and recognised First Aid Certificate. Police checks are required by some placement agencies. Students are advised that they will be required to attend field education placements generally but not exclusively during normal working hours in both teaching and non teaching weeks, for between 3 and 5 days per week.
