Aim

To prepare human service professionals with a strong foundation in psychology for managing effective practice in diverse and complex environments.

Entry requirements

Applicants are required to have one of the following qualifications:

Qualified for the SACE:

Completed the equivalent secondary education qualifications as required for University entry under SACE and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;

Completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;

Completed or partly completed a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;

Completed at least four Open Universities Australia (OUA) courses at the appropriate level and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;

Completed an award from TAFE or from another registered training organisation at AQF Certificate IV or above and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements; 

Qualified for Special Entry and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;

Completed the University Foundation Studies program.

English language entry requirements

For international applicants for whom English is a second language, the minimum English language requirements are:

International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic): Minimum score of 6.0 in Reading and Writing subscores and minimum overall score of 6.0 obtained within the last two years or corresponding results from an equivalent test such as TOEFL or the appropriate Academic English language level delivered at CELUSA; or

Successful completion of a secondary qualification in Australia within the last two years; or

Successful completion of at least one year of tertiary study in Australia within the last two years; or

Successful completion of one year of secondary or tertiary study conducted and completed in English within the last two years in a country in which:

Content/structure

The double degree program comprises 144 units and includes 13 courses in Psychology, including the minimum 12-course Australian Psychology Accreditation Council accredited sequence; and 16 core courses from the Bachelor of Social Science (Human Services).

Professional Recognition

Australian Psychology Accreditation Council and Australian Institute of Welfare and Community Workers accreditation. Graduates will have completed an APAC accredited undergraduate sequence which will allow them to go on to further study in psychology to satisfy the requirements for registration as a psychologist and eligibility for membership of the Australian Psychological Society. Graduates will be eligible for full membership of the Australian Institute of Welfare and Community Workers.

Honours

Based on academic merit, graduates of this program will be eligible to apply for admission to the honours degree program in either psychology or social science.

Fees for Domestic students: Commonwealth Supported
Fees for Commonwealth Supported Students are calculated at the course level. Click on individual courses in the schedule below to determine total program fees.

Fees for International students: $AU 17,500 per 1.0 EFTSL for students commencing in 2010.
Fees are calculated on a per Unit basis with 1.0 EFTSL = 36 Units.
Fees for International students are determined one year in advance and are subject to variation.

Credit transfer

Students who have completed a TAFE Diploma in Community Services are eligible for 18 units of credit. Students who have completed a TAFE Advanced Diploma in Community Services are eligible for 36 units of credit.

Students who qualify for credit must complete at least 36 units from each of the contributing degrees (ie a total of at least 72 units).

Rules

  1. In accordance with University policy on double degree programs, graduates of the Bachelor of Social Science (Human Services), Bachelor of Psychological Science double degree program will graduate with the School of Social Work and Social Policy, and they will also be listed on the annual graduation list of the School of Psychology.
  2. Students currently enrolled in Bachelor of Social Science (Human Services), Bachelor of Social Work, Bachelor of Psychology or Bachelor of Psychological Science programs are eligible to apply for internal transfer into this award.

Notes

  1. The program is designed to graduate professional human service workers who can function effectively in demanding environments. It satisfies professional and employer requirements through its content and its assessment processes. Students are advised that the program does require consistent participation in a diverse range of potentially challenging classroom, assessment and field activities.
  2. The program is four years of full-time study but may also be studied part-time.
  3. Field Education consists of 500 hours of supervised placement to be undertaken during the fourth year and after completion of all third year courses. Some field education placements may require students to hold a current drivers licence and recognised First Aid Certificate. Police checks are required by many placement agencies. Students will be required to attend field education placements generally but not exclusively during normal working hours in both teaching and non teaching weeks, for between three and five full days per week.

  5. Students planning to undertake Honours in Psychology must successfully complete the Psychology Elective BEHL 4003 Introduction to Psychological Assessment.
