Aim
The aim of the Bachelor of Social Science (Human Services) is to prepare students for the planning, implementation and management of human services work by developing knowledge and skills which integrate theory and practice in the political, behavioural and social sciences and human services.
Entry requirements
Applicants are required to have one of the following qualifications:
Qualified for the SACE:
- recorded achievement in five SACE subjects taken at Stage 2 level; and
- included at least four Stage 2 subjects which are approved Higher Education Selection Subjects (HESS); and
- obtained a competitive TER;
Completed the equivalent secondary education qualifications as required for University entry under SACE and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
Completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
Completed or partly completed a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
Completed at least four Open Universities Australia (OUA) courses at the appropriate level and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
Completed an award from TAFE or from another registered training organisation at AQF Certificate IV or above and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
Qualified for Special Entry and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
Completed the University Foundation Studies program.
Special entry provisions may also apply for ATSI applicants.
Students who have successfully completed a TAFE Certificate IV in Community Services or Justice Studies, a TAFE Diploma in Community Services or Justice Administration, or a TAFE Advanced Diploma in Community Services or Policing are eligible for selection and also receive credit towards the program.
English language entry requirements
For international applicants for whom English is a second language, the minimum English language requirements are:
International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic): Minimum score of 6.0 in Reading and Writing subscores and minimum overall score of 6.0 obtained within the last two years or corresponding results from an equivalent test such as TOEFL or the appropriate Academic English language level delivered at CELUSA; or
Successful completion of a secondary qualification in Australia within the last two years; or
Successful completion of at least one year of tertiary study in Australia within the last two years; or
Successful completion of one year of secondary or tertiary study conducted and completed in English within the last two years in a country in which:
- English is an official language; or
- English is commonly used, as determined by the University.
Content/structure
The program has a strong emphasis on human service management knowledge and skills. It highlights the management of effective service delivery at both individual and project level and policy and program analysis.
Professional Recognition
Graduates of the Bachelor of Social Science (Human Services) are eligible for full membership of the Australian Institute of Welfare and Community Workers.
Honours
Graduates of the Bachelor of Social Science with an interest in research can proceed to the Bachelor of Social Science (Honours) if they meet the entrance requirements for the honours degree.

Fees for International students: $AU 17,500 per 1.0 EFTSL for students commencing in 2010.
Fees are calculated on a per Unit basis with 1.0 EFTSL = 36 Units.
Fees for International students are determined one year in advance and are subject to variation.

Credit transfer
Students who have completed a TAFE Diploma in Community Services are eligible for 18 units of credit. Students who have completed a TAFE Advanced Diploma in Community Services are eligible for 36 units of credit.
Students who have completed a University of South Australia Associate Degree in Correctional Administration (MTCA) are eligible for 36 units credit in the Bachelor of Social Science (Human Services).
Notes
- The program is designed to graduate professional human service workers who can function effectively in demanding environments. It satisfies professional and employer requirements through its content and its assessment processes. Students are advised that the program does require consistent participation in a wide range of potentially challenging classroom, assessment and field activities.
- The program is three years of full-time study but may also be studied part- time.
- Field Education consists of 500 hours of supervised placement to be undertaken during the third year and after completion of all second year courses. Some Field Education placements may require students to hold a current drivers licence and recognised First Aid Certificate. Police checks are required by many placement agencies. Students will be required to attend field education placements generally but not exclusively during normal working hours in both teaching and non teaching weeks, for between three and five full days per week.
- The first and second years of the Bachelor of Social Science (Human Services) are in common with the Bachelor of Social Work. Transfer between awards is possible. Transfer before the end of second year ensures smooth transition to the third year program and avoids any problems in relation to field education and AASW field education requirements.
- WELF 3020 Field Education may be offered in lieu of Human Service Field Education A and B if the prerequisites are met and if resources permit, or where a student is undertaking a School approved overseas placement.
