Aim

The Laws Double Degree will provide a professional level of education for students seeking to pursue a legal career. Study in a complementary discipline will provide students with the background to enable them to operate in a wide range of working environments, depending on the second discipline.

Content/structure

The total number of units required is 180 - that is, 40 courses.

Those 40 courses are divided as follows between the two degree programs:

Three courses (13.5 units) from the Bachelor of Laws Program are not prescribed, enabling double degree students to complete the Honours program (9 units) and one additional elective (4.5 units).

The following degrees may be combined with the Bachelor of Laws in the Law Double Degree:

Professional Recognition

This degree covers in a comprehensive way the academic requirements for admission to practice (the Uniform Admissions Rules) as specified by the National Law Admissions Consultative Committee. Students seeking admission to practice are required to complete an approved practical legal training (PLT) program, the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice offered by The Law Society of South Australia. The GDLP is a 12 month course commencing in January and July of each year. It is expected that students will complete the law degree before commencing the GDLP. Students seeking admission to practice in other Australian jurisdictions should apply to the appropriate admitting authority. The professional recognition for the double degree strands can be found in schedules for the single degrees.

Honours

The law degree will be available as a Bachelor of Laws (with Honours) requiring a GPA of not less than 5 and completion of an Honours thesis of approximately 9,000 words.  The Honours thesis will be weighted as equivalent to 2 courses (9 units).

Fee information

Fees for Domestic students: Commonwealth Supported
Fees for Commonwealth Supported Students are calculated at the course level. Click on individual courses in the schedule below to determine total program fees.

Fees for International students: $AU 18,880 per 1.0 EFTSL for students commencing in 2010.
Fees are calculated on a per Unit basis with 1.0 EFTSL = 36 Units.
Fees for International students are determined one year in advance and are subject to variation.


Rules

  1. The Laws Double Degree comprises of 40 courses totalling 180 units and includes:

    24 courses from the Bachelor of Laws program, and
    16 courses from the Second Degree
     
  2. Eligible students may include a single Honours dissertation worth 9 units in the final year in place of two 4.5 electives

1.     The Law Core courses are offered in Study Periods 2, 4 and 6.

3.     Students not seeking admission to practice law may substitute law electives for the following courses

4.     Students who select the Bachelor of Commerce as the second degree and who are seeking membership of the ICCA must complete LAWS  2005 Corporations and Partnership Law, ACCT 3002 Taxation Law 1 and ACCT 3005 Auditing Theory and Practice. Completion of Corporations and Partnership Law is necessary to be eligibile for CPA Australia membership.

5.     Elective courses should be used to complete professional minors or as listed in the relevant program schedules.

6.     The structure of this program allows students to complete the professional requirements in one discipline. Any courses undertaken in addition to those specified in the recommended schedule must be taken as non-award.

7.     Students must contact the Program Director for advice about their program of study.

8.     Students must complete the requirements of each degree as specified in the relevant program schedule to receive both degree parchments.
