First 4 weeks in the School of Law
Aim
The Laws Double Degree (with Engineering) will provide a professional level of education for students seeking to pursue a legal career. Study in the engineering discipline will provide students with the background to enable them to operate in specialised working environments.
Entry requirements
Applicants are required to have one of the following qualifications:
- Qualified for SACE; and
Recorded achievement in five SACE subjects taken at Stage 2 level; and
Included at least four Stage 2 subjects which are approved Higher Education Selected Subjects (HESS); and
Obtained a competitive TER: - Completed the equivalent secondary education qualification as required for University entry under SACE and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- Completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma, obtaining a minimum score of 24 points and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- Completed or partly completed a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution;
- Completed the University Foundation Studies program with a competitive GPA;
- Qualified for Special Entry.
In addition, International students who speak English as a foreign language must have obtained one of the following standards within the last two years prior to admission:
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test - a minimum overall score of 7.0 with a minimum score of 7.0 in Writing and Speaking sub scores and in 6.5 in Reading and Listening sub scores; or TOEFL equivalent; or
- A tertiary qualification completed in Australia within the last two years at an acceptable academic level.
Content/structure
The total number of units is 225 - that is, 50 courses.
Those 50 courses are divided as follows between the two degree programs:

24 courses from the Bachelor of Laws Program; and
-
A minimum of 26 courses from one of the Engineering degrees.
Students must complete 225 units to meet the requirements of this double degree program.

Professional Recognition
This program meets the academic requirements for admission to practice, as specified by the National Law Admissions Consultative Committee. Students seeking admission to practice are required to complete an approved practical legal training (PLT) program, the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice offered by the Law Society of South Australia. Students seeking admission to practice in other Australian jurisdictions should apply to the appropriate admitting authority. The successful completion of the Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) program is designed to meet the requirements for graduate membership of Engineers Australia and comparable international institutions such as the Institution of Civil Engineers (UK). The successful completion of the Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) program is designed to meet the requirements for graduate membership of Engineers Australia. The professional recognition for other programs can be found in schedules for the single degrees.
Honours
The law degree will be available as a Bachelor of Laws (with Honours) requiring a GPA of not less than 5 and completion of an Honours thesis of approximately 9,000 words.The Honours thesis will be weighted as equivalent to 2 courses (9 units).

Rules
1. The Laws Double Degree comprises 50 courses totalling 225 units and includes:
- 24 Courses from the Bachelor of Laws program, and
- a minimum of 26 courses from one of the Engineering degrees listed.
2. Students must complete 225 units to meet the requirements of this double degree program.
3. It is a prerequisite for this program that students have achieved a score of 10 or better in SACE Stage 2 Mathematical Studies or equivalent.
4. A knowledge of SACE Stage 2 Physics will be assumed in this program.
5. A knowledge of SACE Stage 2 Chemistry will be assumed in this program.

- Elective courses should be used to complete professional minors or as listed in the relevant program schedules.
- The structure of the program allows students to complete the professional requirements in one discipline. Any course undertaken in addition to those specified in the recommended schedule must be taken as non-award.
- Students must contact the relevant Program Director for advice about their program of study.
- Students must complete the requirements of each degree as specified in the relevant program schedule to receive both degree parchments.
- Students who select the Bachelor of Commerce as the second degree and who are seeking membership of The ICAA must complete LAWS 2005 Corporations and Partnership Law, ACCT 3002 Taxation Law 1 and ACCT 3005 Auditing Theory and Practice. Completion of Corporations and Partnership Law is necessary to be eligible for CPA Australia membership.
