Secretary's Office
Hobart Town
11th. October 1824
Sir,
Lord Bathurst's letter to the officer administering the Government of Van Diemen's Land having been returned by the Colonial Secretary to His Honor the Lieutenant Governor, a copy of which having been transmitted to the Reverend P. Conolly, informing him of your appointment to take the Spiritual charge of such of His Majesty's Subjects of the Roman Catholic persuasion as reside in this Colony, I am directed to acquaint you of the objections stated by the Reverend Mr Conolly to your performance of the same, in consequence of the necessity for every Priest of the Roman Catholic Religion to have faculties from the Bishop of the Diocese, before he can officiate.
I have the honor to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient humble servant
John Montague
