Research interests

  • Associate Professor Gary Howat’s recent research focuses on service quality, satisfaction and customer behaviour in tourism, sport, and leisure contexts.
  • In addition, he has obtained grants to examine customer behaviour in tourism, sport and leisure services, including an ARC Collaborative Research Grant.
  • Recent tourism research includes grants to evaluate the self-drive tourist experience on the Adelaide-Melbourne touring routes, and a STCRC Tactical Grant to examine Self-drive Tourism in South Australia’s Limestone Coast.
  • As Co-director of the CERM PI Project, Dr Howat oversees the annual CERM PI benchmarking process for Australian public aquatic centres, leisure centres and golf courses, and operational management benchmarking for Tennis Australia.
  • Dr Howat currently has a supervisory role for five PhD candidates covering topics from wellness tourism to customer retention in leisure and sports organisations.
  • In recent years, Dr Howat has served on the editorial panels for ten international peer-reviewed leisure journals, and has also overseen numerous technical reports for industry collaborators.

Associate Professor Gary Howat's current research agenda relates to the CERM PI Project. Postgraduate supervision to date has been in areas complementary to the CERM PI Project (eg performance measurement, service quality, motivations of sports officials, and customer satisfaction in the leisure industries). Dr Howat currently has a supervisory role for five PhD candidates covering topics from wellness tourism to customer retention in leisure and sports organisations.
