I began lecturing in Teacher Librarianship at the South Australian College of Advanced Education in 1977. I had previously been a secondary English teacher, a librarian at the University of Adelaide and at Oxford University in England. Among a number of other occupations I have been an au pair in Sweden, a travel agent in London and an indexer of The Times Newspapers in Reading.

In 1988 I transferred from lecturing in Librarianship to Literacy and Language Education at the Underdale campus of the University. I was Head of School for Language and Literacy Education in 1996/7 before it merged with the School of Education. In 1998 I retired from work as a full time academic, though I continued in an Adjunct researcher role with the Centre for Literacy, Policy and Learning Cultures.

I was appointed to the position of Student Ombud at the end of April, 2003.
