I joined the School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences in 2004 and am involved in the teaching of chemistry courses across various programs. My research activities have focussed on analytical techniques, although organic synthesis and reactivity remains an interest.

Teaching interests

  • I enjoy contact with students and discovering the obstacles they face with our courses. My interest is to find solutions which address these difficulties.

I teach the following courses

CHEM 1013Chemistry in Life 100
CHEM 1014Chemistry in Life 101
CHEM 2028Pharmaceutical Chemistry 1
CHEM 3019Medicinal Drug Design and Construction 301

Qualifications

BSc, Hons, MSc (Port Elizabeth)

PhD (Pretoria)

Dip Ed (Charles Sturt)

Research interests

  • My current interest is trying to understand the chemical composition and behaviour of squid ink components. The ink itself is a complex mixture which goes far beyond providing a simple smoke screen for protection against predators. Although the biology of squid ink is an interest I share with the Melanin Research Group, my focus is on its pharmacological application. Other members of the team include Mike Kokkinn, Frank Madaras and Kristen Brummer.
  • Another area of interest is in natural product chemistry. I collaborate with Susan Semple on projects in partnership with Indigenous communities in the Cape Yorke peninsula.
  • I also form part of a number of studies looking at the pharmacokinetics of drugs, particularly the development of LC/MS assays.
