My name is Don, and I'm a full time PhD candidate here at UniSA.

My commercial background is in the financial services sector (over 30 years in that industry) having held a number of senior positions with firms involved in investment funds management, plus ran my own business for a while in the 1980's.

Teaching interests

  • I do some lecturing work to keep some variety in life. The areas of interest and where I am happy to take on lecturing work, are those that deal with sustainability issues covering areas such as:
  • (1) The concept of sustainability - its history, aspects (eg, ecological, social etc), its various forms, definitions and meanings, and its philosophical and ethical underpinnings.
  • (2) The way in which sustainability is approached and utilised in today's society at different geographical levels (eg, global, national, local) and within various sectors of society (eg, business, government, the broader community).
  • (3) How we can put sustainability into action: what does it mean to be sustainable? how do we get there? what do we all need to do to support it?

I teach the following courses

BUSS 5252Sustainable Corporate Strategy
BUSS 5250Competitive Strategy PG

My qualifications are:

* Master of Advanced Business Practice - UniSA (2007)

* Master of Business Administration (Advanced) - University of Adelaide (2004)

* Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (2006)

Research interests

  • The area of research interest for my PhD is sustainability in the sense of a 'Sustainable World' which, in broad motherhood terms, refers to the flourish and success of life on Earth for what is for all intents and purposes a 'forever' time frame (acknowledging that in x-million years from now the Earth will be engulfed by the sun). The formal title of the work is "Sustainability and government - a case study of the South Australian Government".
  • The research work is through a case study of the SA Government's approach to sustainability where I am seeking to answer the question "what formulation of a Sustainable World is the SA Government supporting and what are the implications of this for achievement of a Sustainable World?"
  • The project then involves: (a) The development of a typology that sets out various principles of a Sustainable World and the different ways in which these principles are approached. (b) An analysis of the SA Government's approach to sustainability and the mapping of this approach onto the Sustainable World typology. Ecological Footprint Analysis is being used as a key tool for aiding this mapping. (c) Consideration of the impactions of the SA Government's approach for the achievement of a Sustainable World. I am using the concept of Resilience as a key tool for aiding in this analysis.
