Associate Professor Geraldine Bloustien, former Deputy Director and Research Fellow of the Hawke Institute is a key reseacher in the Institute. She is located the School of Communication, International Studies and Langauges (CIL) and responsible, as Program Director, for two degrees: The Bachelor of Marketing and Communication (DBMN) and the Bachelor of Communication (Media and Culture: MBMC). She teaches and supervises Hons and PhDs across cross-disciplinary boundaries of media theory and practice.

Her research areas include youth studies, video production, theories and practices in documentary film, television and film theories, ethnographic methodologies, gender & representation and popular music and culture to contemporary theories and practices of healing. Her work more recently particularly focusses on how new technologies and new forms of media affect invdividuals and communities as learners and acquirers of knowledge. In what ways do they influence the power structures that underpin what is deemed appropriate cultural knowledge?

She is a founding member of the Australian Research Council's National Cultural Research Network.

  • Australian Learning and Teaching and Research Council funded project (ALTC) Facilitating flexible, enquiry-based experiential learning through an accessible, three-dimensional virtual learning environment (3DVLE) ($224,731). Current Projects:

Playing for Life: the everyday music practices of marginalised youth as strategic pathways to agency
 Popular music is widely recognised as affectively and culturally central to marginalised youth, often providing strategic pathways to employment and socio-economic inclusion. This project is the first comparative international project to explore how marginalised youth engage with popular music in post-industrial societies, and how they develop their music and technological skills by using local cultural resources that exist outside of formal schooling. Located in community-based organisations, the study will identify processes of learning and agency from the perspectives of young people themselves. The findings will enrich current social theory on youth, policy and program development of youth services.
