Current Projects:
Men’s Bodies: Listening to the voices of men
| It is arguable that men are now more dissatisfied with their bodies than they have ever been in the past (Pope et al, 2000). Further, there is a strong argument to suggest that despite men making up around 5-10 percent of eating disordered patients (Drummond, 1999; 2002) there are possibly more than these statistics indicate. This research project attempts to understand the social and cultural issues impacting on young men and their bodies. The cohort of men that were targeted to be involved as participants came from community health and counselling agencies. In an earlier project with eating disordered and body image concerned men (Drummond, 1999, 2001) it was these establishments that were identified as being important sites of refuge for them. Through the use of narratives the current project aimed to listen to the voices of young men with respect to their bodies. Therefore this research will attempt to represent these men’s thoughts and perceptions about their bodies in a culture that reflects dynamic change in the archetypal male physique and masculine identity. |
| Gay men have been identified in the literature as being a group of males that have a greater susceptibility of developing body image concerns and subsequent eating disorders. Using narratives within a life historical context this project aims to identify important social and cultural issues impacting on young gay men, their bodies and masculine identity, living in contemporary Western culture. The project uses in-depth qualitative interviews to draw out rich descriptive information from gay men aged between 18-25 years. |
